Obituary for Ruth Cook
It is with great sadness that the family of Ruth Lillian Gertrude Cook (nee Creaser), 104 of Bedford and formerly of Lunenburg, announces her passing on Monday, February 29, 2016 at the Q. E. II Health Science Centre, Halifax.
Much loved by family and friends, Ruth has lived a long life filled with music. Born at Five Houses, N.S. on March 9, 1911, she was the eldest child of Robert Creaser, sailmaker, and Mary Creaser, music teacher. Her parent’s musical ability was passed on to her, and at an early age she graduated with a music diploma from Halifax Ladies College (Conservatory of Music). Her early career began as a church organist in Riverport, N.S., and after her marriage to Ross Douglas Cook in 1939 she took a position as church organist at Central United Church in Lunenburg, retiring after 57 years of continuous service, in 1999, at the age of 88. During the same period she was active as a piano teacher and a participant in community musical events.
She was predeceased by her two brothers, Robert and Hugh, her husband Ross, and two stepsons, Jeffrey and Albert.
She is survived by her two children, Ann (Helmut) Loewen (Rockwood, Ont.) and Anthony (Susan) Cook (Halifax), also by grandchildren Jeanette Rapallo (Stuart), Michael Stuart, Hansel Cook and Adrian Cook, and great grandchildren Aidan Stuart, Malcolm Stuart, Jennifer Rapallo, Stephen Rapallo, Charlotte Cook and Theo Cook and daughter in-law, June Cook and several nieces and nephews.
Ruth enjoyed good health throughout her life. She has consistently had a positive outlook on life, and been a ready helpmate to family and friends. After her marriage she lived in the same Lunenburg house for 67 years. She finally decided in 2006 to sell her house, give up her car, and move to a retirement home in Bedford, N.S., where she purchased a new piano and continued playing her music until shortly before her passing. At her 100th birthday she and her brother Hugh entertained the guests with piano duets.
A service to celebrate Ruth’s life will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. from Central United Church, Lunenburg, Rev. Grace Caines Corkum, officiating. Reception to follow in the church hall and interment will take place at Hillcrest Cemetery, Lunenburg.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Central United Church, Lunenburg, through the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral home, 11213 Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg.
