Dad was born in Selkirk on April 17, 1936, moving into Winnipeg in 1939 while his father was in the military, returning in 1946 and was raised on the family farm in Petersfield. Dad and mom met on a blind date on Feb. 26, 1954. They courted for 3 1/2 years before marrying August 24, 1957. Together they were proud to raise their family of 4 children. Living on McGee Street in Winnipeg until 1975 when dad and mom moved the family to the farm in Petersfield where he resided until his passing.
Dad was a machinist by trade started his employment at Piston Ring Service on July 23, 1956. Dad wore many hats during his 45 plus years of service, including running his own store: Hartland Sales Ltd. at 2577 Portage Ave. from 1977-1989. Dad and mom owned and operated Hartland Sales Ltd, a Generation Group Auto Parts Store not only sold auto parts and tools but he also offered machine shop and alternator/starter repairs. Together they built and grew the business. After closing the store he returned to Piston Ring retiring on November 30, 2001. Retirement didn’t last long as dad and mom started delivering flowers for Plants Plus in the spring of 2002. They enjoyed delivering plants throughout the province and spending the time together. He continued doing the deliveries after mom’s health declined however took Goldie along for the company, retiring in 2013.
Dad was a true patriarch of the family. Family came first. He worked hard to ensure his family was taken care off. He showed great strength, wisdom and leadership during difficult family times and was always there for you when you needed help or advice. Mr. Fix-it would be there.
Dad enjoyed doing things with mom especially travelling to different destinations. They visited Las Vegas, Hawaii, Mexico, Jamaica as well as other locations on family trips. Dad and mom enjoyed fishing and a favorite spot was to go to Barrier Bay in the Whiteshell.
Dad appreciated nature and all that it gives. In his younger days he hunted and fished. At the farm, he enjoyed sitting on his bench, Goldie by his side watching the birds and wildlife, working in his garden, harvesting his fruits and vegetables to give away.
After moms passing, dad continued his visits to Tudor House where mom had resided. Dad and Goldie would visit the residents Tuesdays and Thursdays until he couldn’t do it anymore because of his health. Dad developed many friendships during this time.
This past year was a journey for us all. Dad was hospitalized on February 8, 2016. After spending 2 months in the hospital, dad was able to go home with the support of his children and homecare. On August 17, 2016 dad was readmitted to hospital for the final time.
The family would like to say thanks to the numerous members of the health care team that have helped dad during his journey. We would especially like to thank Dr. Speer and Dr.Czaykowski (Nurse Denise) for their care of dad. Also to all the home care staff, the nurses, health care aides and staff at Selkirk and District General Hospital for their extra special care of dad.
