Obituary for Philip Lynch
Philip Lynch of Vancouver passed away peacefully at home at the age of 85, surrounded by the love of his family, on Tuesday, August 29th, 2017. He will be dearly missed by Barbara, his wife of 54 years, and by his three children and their spouses, Brian (Alexandra), Christina (Neil), and Patrice (David). Philip was a devoted grandfather and will be greatly missed by his beloved grandson and pal, Samuel.
He was the son of the late Patrick and Annie (Curtin) Lynch of Glasgow, Scotland. He is survived by his siblings Annie and Joseph, and is pre-deceased by his siblings Ellen, Rose, and Mary. He will be missed by many loving nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Philip was born in Glasgow and attended the Glasgow School of Art and the Royal Technical College, eventually gaining his professional qualification as an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects. He immigrated to Canada in the mid-1950s, where he enjoyed a successful career in building design and engineering. During this time he made many close, life-long friends, who became like family.
Philip was a generous, intelligent, funny, and honourable man who took delight in simple things: walking and cycling the trails of North Vancouver, chatting over a drink and dinner, and reading in the shade of his serene back yard. His great warmth and ease reflected a faith in the goodness of everyday life. He was always ready with a song, a joke, or calming words of encouragement.
Throughout his many years, he remained dedicated to his own architectural and engineering projects, designing everything from houses to furniture. He was forever attached to his native culture, and traveled regularly with Barbara back to the U.K. and Ireland to visit family, enjoy the beauty of the landscape, and reacquaint himself with the old museums, churches, and pubs he loved so well.
Philip lived each day with a quiet, gentle kindness and optimism. His illness in later life never changed this. Heartfelt thanks to his wonderful caregivers, who helped him so much in the last year and made each day special for him. May he be reunited with loved ones and know how deeply he will be missed by those he leaves behind.
