SYLVESTER, Nova Scotia – On Thursday, May 4th, 2017: Olaf Grosvold, age 88, passed away, while being attended to by his daughters, Inga and Annie.
Born on January 21st, 1929, in Drummond Parish, N.B., Olaf was a son of the late Halvard Tollefsen and Inga Antonsdatter (Sjulsen) Grosvold. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by wife, Betty Louise Hazel Grosvold; son, Halvard; sisters, Tilla Karlsen, Agnes Rasmussen, Gunvor (Helen) Skaling, Marie Skaling and Sophie Poole; brothers, Tollef, Leo, Sigvart, Karsten and Hoken.
Olaf is survived by his son, Michael (Cheryl) Grosvold, Berwick; daughters, Inga Grosvold, Sylvester; Annie Grosvold, New Glasgow; Hazel Sheehan, New Glasgow; sister, Sylvia (Ken) Millard, Brooklyn. Grandchildren; Leann, Erik, Sarah, Dan, Jordan, Jameson, Eirik, Thomas and Jeffery. Great grandchildren; Ethan and Evan. Olaf’s brother-in-law and best friend: Arthur “Art” (Joan) Dunn, Rocklin.
For 32 years Olaf worked for the C.N.R. He retired as Regional Manager of Work Equipment, for the Atlantic Region. He was particularly proud of: 1) His role in designing and building the Killam Drive Shop, in Moncton; 2) The C.N.R. White Fleet, a seven year journey. 3) Being recognized as an Honorary Engineer, an honor bestowed upon him, while in the Great Lake Region. 4) To be invited, by the men and women he worked with, to attend their C.N. dinner, in Moncton, each year.
Olaf had many passions: family, hunting, fishing, his camp in Economy and playing music (the button accordion). He often said “playing music was the greatest gift God gave him. It opened many doors and brought people together.” And he always had a story to tell. Later in life he would admit “proudly” that his wife, Betty, had taken over the title of “Best Hunter” in the family.
Olaf had been a longtime member of The Independent Order of Foresters, 1959 – 2017. Olaf had been a Mason, as of Oct. 11th,1960. He recently received his 55-year Jewel. His involvement in masonry allowed him to: complete the 32nd degrees in both the York Rite and Scottish Rite. Past Master of the former Curren Lodge, (A.F. & A.M., No. 68). Past Master of Keith Lodge, (A.F. & A.M., No. 23). Past District Deputy Grand Master of Pictou County. Past High Priest, Mount Lebanon (Chapter No. 14, R.N.S.). Member Orient Council No. 5, (Eastern Jurisdiction of Canada), Royal and Select Masters. Malta Preceptory, (Millitia Templi 27, K.T.). Member Philae Temple, (A.A.O.N.M.S, Halifax). Past President of the Pictou County Shrine Club. Dad remained focused on The Shriners Children’s Hospitals, till his passing.
Throughout his life people marveled at his memory and his accomplishments. Very talented, very resourceful, helpful and kind. Met every challenge head on. He loved his wife and family. We were blessed to have such a good man in our lives.
Funeral service will be held 12 p.m. noon, Friday, May 12 in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home Chapel, New Glasgow with Rev. Charles McPherson officiating. Interment will be in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens.
