Neil William Winn Gilliat of Red Deer, AB. passed away at the Red Deer Hospice on February 8, 2017 at the age of 88 years.
Neil was born February 16,1928 near Edenthorpe South Yorkshire. After being honourably discharged from the Black Watch Regiment he travelled to Canada with the intent of working his way to Australia but he never made it past the Rocky Mountains. Neil became one of the first Forest Rangers in the newly created Department of Lands and Forests in Alberta. He started as a ranger in Entrance Alberta, met his wife Jean in Hythe Alberta and finished his career in the forestry as the Forest Superintendent in Slave Lake. After a few years with the Department of Regional Economic Expansion, he struck out on his own, first owning a car dealership in Slave Lake, then as a consultant helping to bring new business ventures to Alberta such as the Westcan Malting (now Rahr Malting Co) plant in Alix, AB. He authored two books on his life in the Forestry. He was a generous man who helped many people find a new life in this country, just as he had.
Lovingly Remembered by Jean Gilliat, his wife of 62 years of Red Deer, son James (Rosalee)of Spring, Texas. Daughter Barbara, of Alix AB. Grandchildren Hugh (Jade) and Robyn (Matt) of Calgary Alberta.
At Neil’s request there will not be a service. Memorial Donations be made to the Red Deer Hospice, 99 Arnot Ave. Red Deer, AB. T4R 3S6
