Nancy Rosina McFarland
1952-2017
Nancy Rosina (Rix-Crossman) McFarland lost her battle with
cancer on the 26th of December, 2017 at home in
the company of family and friends. She was born May 15, 1952, in
Springfield West, Prince Edward Island.
Nancy is survived by her son Saul McFarland of Toronto; her
daughter Faith McFarland of Fredericton; her granddaughter Fiona
Hashey-McFarland of Fredericton; her sister Debby (Wilson) of
Summerside; her brothers Charles Crossman of Summerside and Joseph
Crossman of Halifax (Gail); her nephews Michael Craig of Montreal,
Quebec, Alex Wilson of Miscouche, PEI, and Adam Crossman of Halifax;
her niece, Rachael Crossman, of Halifax, as well as many good and
close friends.
She was predeceased by her parents Elvin L. Crossman of Cape
Wolfe, PEI, and Constance « Connie » W. (Rix) Crossman
of Springfield West, PEI and her sister Lloydia (Craig), of Montreal,
Quebec.
Throughout her life Nancy gave generously of her time to try
to improve our community, including co-founding the Fredericton
Anti-Poverty Organization (FAPO), running for a seat in the
Legislature for the New Democratic Party, and co-founding the Women’s
Alliance (WALL), an advocacy group for women living in poverty. She
accomplished all this and more, while a single parent of two amazing
children.
Despite the social inequalities that exist in our country,
Nancy believed in, and worked for, the equal right to health care,
fair wages, food security, and livable, secure, affordable housing for
everyone. She had a fierce sense of justice coupled with the ability
to forgive. She was capable of compassion and empathy without being
patronizing and was an amazing listener. Her advice, when solicited,
was almost flawless, but she did not hesitate to seek the advice of
others. Nancy drew great serenity from her involvement and commitment
to the recovery community of AA. She was a kind and giving person
whose home, like her heart, was open to all.
The family invites her friends to celebrate the life of Nancy
