Main, Mary Morrison, -age 87 of Dartmouth, passed away on October 3, 2016, peacefully, at home.
Born in Bridgend, Islay, Scotland, she was a daughter of the late John and Isabella (McMillan) Morrison.
Mary was a very strong and exceptional woman, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who persevered through some very difficult times. Mary grew up on the island of Islay on the West coast of Scotland; she then moved to the opposite coast to the town of Nairn where she met and married Ronald Main and had two children Ronnie and Isla. She immigrated with her family to Canada in Nov 1961 taking up residence in the Ottawa Valley where she worked putting tuners in black and white television sets at the RCA plant in Renfrew.
She then moved to Toronto and settled down in a small home in the east end area near the Beaches. She spent her working years in Toronto in the service and retail industries and was the « second » mother to a number of Isla and Ronnie’s friends. After Mary and Ron’s marriage ended, she tragically lost her daughter Isla to an accident in 1978 and never truly got over that loss. She always kept Isla’s memory alive in her heart.
She moved with her loving partner Edmund “Ed” Manikowsi to Dartmouth, in 1991 to be closer to her son Ronnie, daughter in-law Carole, and granddaughters, Melissa and Tara. Sadly, she lost Ed to cancer in 1995. After the loss of Ed, she adopted her best friend Teddy, a perky little Peekapoo who was her companion for 17 years.
Mary was very close to her granddaughters Melissa and Tara and was very happy to meet her great granddaughter Cadence who just turned three years old. Mary was a huge part of our lives, it is difficult for us to imagine life without her. She will be sorely missed.
Survived by her son Ronnie Carole (Arseneau) Main; brother Ian (Kay) Morrison; sister-in-law Katherine Morrison; grandchildren, Melissa (Trevor) Flynn and Tara (Scott) Gray; and great grandchildren Cadence Gray, Abigail and Liam Flynn; and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her dear friend Florence.
She was predeceased by her partner Ed Manikowski; daughter Isla; sisters Katie (Neil) Gillespie and Peggy (John) Nairn; and her brother Donald Morrison.
Visitation will be held on Thursday October 6 in the Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main Street, Dartmouth from 1pm to 2pm with the funeral service immediately following at 2pm in the funeral home chapel, Rev. James Haughn officiating.
Reception to be held in Ron and Carole’s home following the service.
Interment to take place in St. John’s Norway Cemetery in Toronto at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Red Cross Home Care Services.
