Mary M. Cox
Mary MacNeill Cox, of Saint John, passed away in her
94th year, February 4, 2017, at the Saint John
Regional Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Born November 10,
1923 in Fredericton, Mary was predeceased by her husband of 57 years,
Kenneth V. Cox. She was the daughter of Franklin and Gladys Dow,
Fredericton, where Mary grew up and attended both high school and UNB.
Mary was a lovely soprano and enjoyed singing in the choir of Wilmot
United Church, Fredericton and later as a soloist at St.
Mark’s United Church, Lancaster.
The last of her siblings, she was predeceased by her beloved
brothers Kenneth Dow (June) and Lawrence Dow (Ruth), and by her dear
sister Hazel Collier (Bob Collier, Bill Spence). She leaves her
children David R Cox (Dina), Rodney A Cox (Susan), Marilyn L Allison
(Brent), and Kenneth H Cox (Rose).
Mary is also survived by grandchildren Pamela Meek (Kevin),
Andrea Addison (Jason), David Cox (Elizabeth Nguyen-Huy), Elizabeth
Daher (Chris), Heather Hall (Joe), Megan Mitchell (Geoff), Katelyn
Cox, Alex Cox, and step-grandchildren Berry Allison (Stacy), and
Andrea Thompson (Greg).
She had the good fortune to have known and been loved by
several great-grandchildren: Matthew, Leah, Nathan, Avery, and Colin
Meek; Jack, Mark MacNeill, Luke, and Scott Addison; Theodore Bao-Huy
Cox; Dominic and Samantha Daher; Charlie Hall; and Hazen, Lucy, and
Mary Mitchell.
Mary will also be fondly missed by several nieces and nephews
and their families: Gregg Dow (Cindy), Christopher Dow, Stephen Dow
(Denyse), Michael Dow (Beatrice), Nancy Dow (Joanne), Patricia
Collier, Janet Levesque (Terry), Carolyn and John
Collier.
She was also predeceased by her cherished friend, and golf,
duplicate bridge, and curling partner, Mildred Jones.
Mary enjoyed many activities including golfing, curling, and
duplicate bridge, and as well she enjoyed many relaxing summers with
her family at Magaguadavic Lake. A long-time member of St.
Mark’s Church in Saint John, she also served on the board of
the Saint John YWCA. A member of Fundy Duplicate Bridge Club, Mary was
most proud of achieving her ACBL Bronze Life Master. A very
competitive athlete, she was a two time winner of the Senior
Ladies’ New Brunswick Curling Championship, going on to play
in the national finals. She played basketball while attending UNB.
Most recently, she was a recipient of the Thistle St. Andrews Curling
Club Legacy Award, 2016.
Visitation will be at Brenan’s Bay
View Funeral Home, 1461 Manawagonish Road, West Saint
John (634-7425) on Thursday February 9, 2017, 2:00 – 4:00
p.m., and from 7:00 – 9:00 in the evening. A funeral service
will be held in the Chapel of Brenan’s Bay View at 10:00
a.m. Friday February 10, 2017.
Remembrances in honour of Mary may be made to the SPCA, or to
the Alzheimer Society, as well as to a charity of your choice.
