Hicks, Marg
Margaret Helen Veitch Hicks lived a fierce, adventurous, artistic and loving life.
Born January 1, 1932 in Toronto, to Andrew Max Veitch and Rose Dorothy Powell Veitch, the first daughter of three (Evelyn Milligan; Ann Murphy). She attended Parkdale Collegiate, editing the “Parkdalian”, and graduating as top academic girl.
At University of Toronto she completed a POTS (combined Physical & Occupation Therapy degree), and then pursued an independent homecare practice.
In 1957, she met Gordon Vincent Hicks, an architectural draftsman and athlete, without question the love of her life. They married shortly afterwards.
Gordon Scott (partner Monica Tap), Wendy Anne, Lisa Kathryn (Nick Vanderkamp) and Caroline Jane (Grant Lamont) are Marg and Gord’s four children. The four continue Marg’s tradition as spirited, educated, curious individuals. Beloved grandchildren are Maddie Lafleur, Kyrie Hicks, Mahon Lamont, Allie Lafleur, Mae Margaret Vanderkamp and Caleigh Lamont.
She returned to her therapy career in her mid-40’s, working at St. Mary’s Hospital (Kitchener) and the Region of Waterloo (Home Care).
Marg was strong willed, passionate, an extraordinary mum, a dear friend, a devoted sibling, and artist, a voracious reader, superior gardener and lifelong learner. Her work endures in the permanent collection, Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery and in handmade quilts.
She was loved, adored, respected, and “game for anything”. She leaves a huge hole; she is irreplaceable.
