Maisie Stevenson (nee Kiernan) – 2016

Maisie Stevenson (nee Kiernan) As she was in life, so she was in death: courageous, indefatigable, fiery, beautiful, and with a will to live matched only by her will to laugh. A powerful artist who layered vibrant oils onto large canvases. She moved from still life, nudes, and impressionistic works of her children and life partner to large abstract works of the landscape surrounding her beloved farm in Picton Ontario. The power of her work belied absolutely her small frame. She was a fashionista before the term was coined. It was said of her: « once Maisie walks into a room, no one else is dressed. » She exercised this creative expression in the design of her own wardrobe with inspiration from L’Officiel (de la couture et de la mode de Paris). Suburban Torontonians in the 1960’s and 1970’s were in for a treat. Always an aspiring business woman, in the 1980s, she combined her passion for art and fashion into a career in sales at the Holt Renfrew Company in their Toronto flagship store. Here she worked as a valued employee until her retirement in 2004. Born on April 4, 1927 in Drogheda Ireland to James and Rita Keirnan, she would spend her formative years along with her two brothers Patsy and Frank, and sister Lily, in Dublin. She met her soulmate and the singular love of her life, Joly, one summer evening at a dance at the Butlins’ Holiday Camps where she worked for a number of years during her 20s. While there, she was a high profile member of their entertainment staff. Joly and Maisie would eventually marry in Los Angeles in 1956, but not before she sailed solo from England to New York and then travelled onto Los Angeles where she explored her options as an air stewardess. Dad eventually caught up with her there, and convinced her to marry him. Directly after the wedding, he bought a new car (a Studebaker) and drove Maisie (a beautiful blonde in the style of Marlene Dietrich and wearing a red silk dress) back to his Air Force base in the tiny outpost of Portage la Prairie. From here, they started on their now joint-adventure through life until he died in 2014. They travelled the world. They had twin girls, Sinead and Siobhan; a son, Damien; and another daughter, Aisling. From 1968, they lived in Toronto, and in the early 2000s, they moved permanently to their farm in Prince Edward County, Ontario… which they shared with Monty, their standard poodle and « fifth child ». In the meantime, Aisling and Michel (dear son-in-law) provided them with the joy of their lives, 3 grandchildren: Charlotte (1999), Chloe (2001) and Lily (2005). In 2010, they moved to Moncton NB to be closer to their granddaughters. Maisie is predeceased by her husband, Walter « Joly » Clegg Stevenson; her daughter, Sinead Jane; her son, John Damien; and most recently, Monty. She is also predeceased by her parents, her brothers Patsy and Frank, and her sister Lily and many dear friends. She is missed by Siobhan and Aisling and Michel and her nephew Bryan Jackson, as well as her grandchildren. She lives on forever in Charlotte, Chloe and Lily. Thank you to the amazing staff at the Briarlea Retirement residence. Although she was there only a short time, they gave her love and care and us as well. We are eternally grateful. What a magical group of women. Fergusons Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995) in care of arrangements. A Funeral Mass to celebrate Maisie’s life will be held at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Falkland St., on Thursday, July 21, 2016, at 3:00 pm, with Rev. Charles Broderick presiding. Interment, Cherry Valley, Ontario. In memory of Maisie, donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family. Online condolences at www.fergusonsfuneralhome.com
