Lorraine M. (Laffin) McNeil
Alder Point
It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Lorraine McNeil, 86, on Tuesday, August 16, 2016, at the Northside Community Guest Home, North Sydney. Mom fought many battles in life with her health. She was always so strong and courageous. This time was no different. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Bras d’Or on February 22, 1930, she was the daughter of the late William and Rose (Matthews) Laffin. She was a member of St. Ann’s Parish, Alder Point. Lorraine had such strong faith and beliefs.
Mom had one of the hardest jobs there is, raising a family, which she loved and dedicated her life to. We remember a happy home, filled with so much love. Mom took great pride in having an impeccable household, and those of us lucky enough to visit the McNeil home will always remember her tasty baked goods and gigantic date squares. She was a gracious person who everyone loved. We were all so blessed to call her mother, sister, wife, friend, and especially “Nanny”. Mom will fondly be remembered by all who knew her as having such a soft spoken manner and kind heart. “Now honey, let me tell ya.”
Mom spent the last year and a half at the Northside Community Guest Home, where she was shown exceptional care, concern, and compassion. Thank you staff and God bless you all. We shall never forget your kindness.
She was the loving wife of husband Nathan, who she fondly referred to as “Nate” for 67 wonderful years. He was and will always be the true love of her life. Lorraine was a devoted mother to her children; Tommy (Judy) McNeil, Georges River, Ronnie (Debbie) McNeil, Georges River, Richie (Marion) McNeil, Millville, Dougie (Kim), McNeil, Alder Point, Alana Briand, North Sydney, and Jeanie (Dave) Viva, Alder Point. She is survived by her grandchildren; Valerie, Tanya, Matthew, Brad, Michael, Kris, Gardner, Brittany, Hannah, Shannon, Mitchell and Kayla, and great-grandchildren Jack, Kate, Max, Nathan, Parker, Sydney, Oliver, Sara and Avery, who were the light of her life. Also surviving is her sister and best friend, Beverly Bungay, Alder Point, and many nieces and nephews who she loved very much.
Lorraine was predeceased by her loving son Tommy in 2014, infant children Russell, Angus and Mary, sisters Eleanor, Esther and Yvonne, brothers Reggie and Roger, great-grandchildren Gardner Kris, Abbigail and Bradley Jr., and her dear and special friend, Marg LeBlanc.
There will be no visitation by request. A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, August 19, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Ann’s Church, Alder Point, with Fr. Peter McLeod officiating. A luncheon will be served in the Alder Point Hall, following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations in Lorraine’s memory may be made to the Crohn’s and Colitis Society of Canada, or the Northside Community Guest Home. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com
