It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our dearly loved father, Lino. He was at peace when he died after a short battle with cancer. He will be sorely missed by his son Mark, and daughter Marina, his loving grand-daughter, Sophie and dear partner, Robbie Shaw, dear brothers Carlo (Giuliana), Paolo (Lucy) and Sandro (Ada) and many cousins, nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by Paul Shaw, Danielle Carter, and Terry Shaw, Bill Klimowych, dear friends the Flaim Family, Ian Russell (Bruna Nota), the Bellissimo Family, former wife Rosemary, former son-in-law John and many acquaintances too numerous to name.
Born in Revò, Trentino, Italy, to Meri Bertoldi and Giuseppe Magagna. Our Dad arrived in Canada by boat on his own in 1952 with one small suitcase and not knowing a word of English. He stayed with his Zia Annie in Vancouver, while finishing high school at night then completing training as a mechanic. He spent his summers labouring on the Trans-Canada Highway and afterwards travelled up and down the Coast of BC as a heavy equipment mechanic. He then went on to pursue his degrees as a top student at UBC and UofT. It was at UBC where he met his lifelong friend and English Professor Gordon Elliott.
In addition to a successful career at Ontario Hydro supervising the design of computer controls for Ontario’s Nuclear Power Stations and working in Finance before retirement, he also devoted his time and energy to various volunteer agencies and community groups because of his firm belief in social justice and his wish to help others.
He was the President of COSTI-IIAS Immigrant Services for 10 years, the founder and first Vice-President of the National Congress of Italian-Canadians, and former Vice Chairman of the Canadian Consultative Council on Multiculturalism. It was during this time that he became friends and worked closely with Charles Caccia, MP.
After 20 years on the Senate and the Board of Directors of York University, he remains an Honourary Member of its Board. He was a Member of the Board of the United Way GTA, Ontario March of Dimes, and Member of the Ontario Council of University Affairs. In 1988, he became a Member of the Order of Canada and also received the Golden and Diamond Jubilee medals.
Dad also had a love for poetry and of the Arts spending many days reading, at music concerts, galleries, theatre and opera with Robbie. Having grown up in a valley of the Alps, this instilled a life-long love of mountain-hiking and the beauty of nature.
Donations in his memory would be appreciated to Music Toronto and Anishnawbe Health. At our Dad’s request there will be no service but we appreciate your sharing of memories on this Webpage. Our thanks go out to the doctors and nurses at Trillium Health Mississauga for their help, care and dedication.
