Lance Timothy Surs – 2017

Obituary for Lance Summers
Peacefully on February 28 in the arms of the love of his life, Lance (my Honey) passed on.
Lance will be forever cherished and dearly remembered by his devoted wife, partner and best friend of 33 years Lori, his companion Bingo IV and best friend Bruce Rogers (Darlene). He is survived by his brother Cole and sister Kelly, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and his “girls”: Sheri, Darcia and Oksana. He is predeceased by his parents Danny and Blanche Summers and his dogs Bingo’s I, II and III and Sandy.
Born in Winnipeg on March 7, 1953, Lance grew up in Silver Heights “terrorizing” the neighbourhood. He often spoke about all of the fun adventures growing up, ultimately creating lifelong friendships.
Lance was an avid hunter and fisherman and had the opportunity to share his passion while working with at-risk youth at a boy’s camp in northern Manitoba. His love for cars led him to opening Summers Auto Centre, and later worked in sales of boats and small engine products.
In 1987 Lance and Lori married starting their wonderful life together creating treasured friendships and embracing the many gifted opportunities; the exceptional Winnipeg Jets years and then moving to Phoenix in 1996, returning in 2002 making their dream come true of living at their initial meeting place of War Eagle Lake. Lance’s Honey Do List immediately filled up with expanding and converting the cottage into an all-season home, building a garage and finishing the guest cottage, as well as the many ongoing projects for himself and others. His role quickly grew into becoming the “Sheriff” of our little piece of heaven at War Eagle Lake.
What a special special man Lance was. ALWAYS willing and able to do anything and everything for anyone, no favour was ever too much to ask. His love for people and life made his personality even larger. He was a kind gentle giant of a man. Whether it was a visit or a quick drop-in just to say hi, Lance always took the time to ensure everything was fine in the lives of those he cared about. Lance had the gift to walk into a room of strangers and leave with a roomful of new friends. His unique down to earth quality of, “Lance being Lance”, treating everybody the same, put everyone at immediate ease. A life rich with dear friends from all around the world. He seemed invincible to all, dependable, consistent and comforting, no one ever doubting his presence would be lost. He was a great mentor and took immense pride in sharing his vast knowledge and skills. He was a fantastic host and always cooked with that special ingredient of “love” each day whether it was dinner for the two of us or for 65 at his legendary wing-dings. His passing will be felt for many years to come. He will be forever present in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. A life so well lived, but taken far too soon.
A special thank you to all who medically cared for Lance over the past six weeks; Kenora Hospital Emergency Room doctors and staff, Cancer Care Manitoba, Urgent Care (Dr. Kristjanson) and staff, A4 Internal Medicine and then finally Dr. Sharma and the wonderful nurses and unit assistants on RR6 at HSC.
A Celebration of Life will be hosted at our home on War Eagle Lake at a later date.
If so desired, Lance’s wish was that any donations be made to It’s A Dog’s Life, Box 291, Keewatin, ON, P0X 1C0.
Words cannot express our eternal gratitude for Bruce and Darlene Rogers who travelled every step of this tragic nightmare with us. Their love for Lance and I (and Bingo) acted as our lifeline as the sun rose each morning dawning a new day.
“Sweet Dreams My Honey, until we are together again.”
