John Reginald Gilroy It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of our awesome Dad, Grandpa and Great Grandpa, (John) Reggie Gilroy, June 4, 2016 at St. Mary’s Hospital at the wonderful age of 84. We feel blessed to have had so many years with Dad. There are so few fine gentlemen left in the world and he was one of them. Never a day went by that he wasn’t wearing a pressed shirt and tie along with one of his many cardigans. A kind and gentle soul, Reggie never complained about his health and always maintained he had a « happy life with a wonderful wife ». He enjoyed the slower-paced, low-tech lifestyle; no computers or online banking for him. He preferred to do business face-to-face, the old-fashioned way and had his favourite tellers at the bank and knew the staff at the drug store and grocery store by name. Reggie was born on June 23, 1931 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, the youngest child of John Quinn Gilroy and Sarah McCartan. Reggie arrived on his sister Eileen’s 17th birthday; a birthday he later shared – along with a special bond – with his granddaughter Abigail. Later sharing that birthday with his great grandson Jacob, as well. He was the last remaining member of his family, predeceased by his siblings: Terrance, Sarah, Mabel, and Eileen. Left with wonderful memories of his generous and funny spirt are three loving and grateful children, Pauline (Paul Berry), John, and Sharon (James Dreher). Waiting for him at heaven’s gate is his beloved Jo (2011), whom he was married to for 56 years and their eldest daughter Ann Marie (1995). He also leaves behind many grandchildren whose lives he blessed: Sean and Kelly O’Neill, Robert, Adam, Erin and Quinn McMichael, Emma, Abigail and Gabriella Dreher, Anna Marie and Abbie Gilroy; as well as great grandchildren Mackenzie, Keira and Aria O’Neill, Taylor Picard, Emma and Kal-el Hornsby, Hailey, Kayla, Jacob and Declan McMichael. Also mourning his passing are his brother-in-law Jim Kane and many nieces and nephews in both Ireland and Canada. In particular, he will be missed by his two special nieces who were like sisters to him, Patsy Donnelly and Sally (Archie) McVicker in Ireland. In the midst of a Canadian blizzard on November 15, 1972, Jo and Reggie brought their young family from the political unrest of Belfast, Northern Ireland to Kitchener and put down roots. (John) Reggie began working at LazyBoy and later the City of Kitchener; with his last 20 years spent at the old Kitchener Farmer’s Market where he stayed until his early retirement following a heart attack in 1996. In the early years Reggie worked several part-time jobs in addition to his full-time City job to provide for his family the best he could. But it was the old Market that provided him with many years of joy and pride and he had many fond memories of the vendors as well as the « boys » who worked for him over the years. His days as « M1 » were happy ones. Deeply devoted to his Catholic faith, Reggie was an example to his family and prayed for them all with daily devotions. Over the years Reggie had been a member of St. Aloysius Parish, Blessed Sacrament Parish and St. Mark’s Parish. Reggie’s dearest friendships were the ones he maintained long-distance with regular trips home to Belfast with Jo. He will be missed by close friends and neighbours that he and Jo visited regularly, Phil and Eamon Burns, Patsy and Peter McIlwain and May and Tom Sloan, all in Ireland. At Reggie’s request he will rest at his home. Those that knew him are welcome to call the family. All others are welcome at his Mass of Christian Burial at Blessed Sacrament Church, Kitchener on Wednesday June 8 at 11am, Father Larry Parent officiating. Cremation to follow with private family interment at Williamsburg Cemetery at a later date. The family has requested no flowers as per Reggie’s wishes. If you wish, donations can be made to St. Mary’s Hospital Cardiac Care Unit through the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 519-749-8467. Sacred Heart of Jesus have mercy on his soul.
