Joan Redfern

Joan Redfern

Our beloved mother and grandmother died peacefully, with grace and dignity as was her way, on September 19, 2016, surrounded by her family in Oakville, Ontario.
Joan was predeceased by her cherished husband and best friend, Donald Blaine Redfern, and her sister Burleigh Leishman. She is survived by her children, Janet Beddoe (John Berg), Andrew (Jean), Pamela Redfern Brands (Andrew) and Alan (Stephanie); sisters Patricia Ballantyne and Dossé Matthews; grandchildren Dawn, Christopher, Blaine, Ryley, Jill, Kate, Shannon, Christian, David, Crofton, Madeleine, Bronwyn and Benjamin; and great grandchildren Trevor, Adalyn, Matthew, Phin and Sophie.
Joan spent her early years with her family in England before moving back to Toronto during the war where she attended Havergal College. She was a proud graduate of the School of Nursing at the Hospital for Sick Children. An active volunteer her whole life, Joan was the President of the Volunteer Committee at the Art Gallery of Ontario and a long standing member of the Toronto Zoo, the Garden Club of Toronto, the Hincks Treatment Centre, the Junior League and Exploring Toronto.
Joan was a talented gardener, needle worker, bridge player, cook, art lover and fairy garden designer. She could fillet a black bass better than anyone. She made friends far and wide and held them dearly in her heart.
Joan loved her farm in Eramosa and spent every summer at her beloved Go Home Bay.
Above all, Joan loved her family. She was devoted to Don from the young age of 16 and together they had a wonderful marriage, full of fun, family and adventure. She and Don travelled the world together, hosted fabulous parties, and laughed often. Their home was always full of wonderful music, much song and many roast beef dinners. Joan was adored as a wife, mother and grandmother, and her love for her children and grandchildren was unconditional.
She will be forever loved and deeply missed.
A Celebration of Joan’s Life will be held at the Badminton and Racquet Club, 25 St. Clair Ave. West, Toronto on what would have been her 88th birthday on Monday, October 17th, at 1:30 p.m.
Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Society of Ontario.
