Obituary of James Newton
Newton, James Thomas Leslie
No one will argue that Jim Newton was “one of a kind”. He died peacefully on December 27th at Guelph General Hospital, due to lung complications. Minutes before his death, the nurse reported that he was busily completing his daily crossword puzzle from the KW Record.
He was born James Thomas Leslie Newton in Niagara Falls, ON on February 5, 1940. He started his working career as a teacher in Simcoe, where he met and married the love of his life, Peg Pauls. Teaching was fun for a while, but Daddio didn’t like to stick to the curriculum. So, it was off to Zettel Manufacturing, and then Walmart. Greeting at Walmart was his dream job. Anyone that entered Fairview Park Mall knows this to be a reality. He also took great pride in newspaper delivery, and writing for the New Hamburg Independent.
The passing of Papa has left a huge hole in the lives of his three children: Susan (Newton) and Graham Abell, Steven Newton and Sheri Friesen, and Jim Jr. and Paula Newton. His grandchildren will never forget how much their Papa adored them: Cole, Brock, Jack, Devyn, Kaitlyn, and Jason. He is also survived by his sister Marian and husband Bill Kloetstra.
Jim loved people, and his family most of all. He was 77, but if you met him, his personality, zest for life, and energy was that of a 20 year old. He attended every basketball game, and if you were at the game, you would know he was there. He spent most of the game patrolling the sideline, seeking out the next person he would bombard with inquiries. We can honestly say, that he got the most out of every single day.
Yesterday, we asked him where he was going to go when he died. He replied, « To heaven, to be with my lover Peg ». His wife passed away a short six months ago.
We sit here and reflect on his life, and the profound impact that he made on those around him. His legacy will live on in his children, grandchildren and all those he touched.
Visitation will be held on Monday, January 1, 2018 at Bethel Evangelical Missionary Church,1531 Bridge St., New Dundee, on Monday, January 1st from 12 noon until 1:45. A celebration of Jim’s life will follow at 2 p.m. with a reception afterward in the fellowship hall of the church.
