Carroll, James Edwin « Ebbie »- age 90 of
Guysborough. Died in the Guysborough Memorial Hospital on Wednesday,
September 27, 2017. Ebbie was born in Sherbrooke on May 8, 1927, the
eldest son of the late Patrick McFarlane Carroll and Ada (Jordan)
Carroll.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his loving
wife of 52 years, Mary Dorothea « Dot » (Anderson)
Carroll; daughter, Katherine Anne Uher; brothers, Robert and Lawrence.
He is survived by daughters, Coleen Jones (Francis) Antigonish;
Patricia Deagle (Lawrence) and Anita Hall (Phillip) both of
Guysborough; Edwina Chisholm, Antigonish; sons, Robert
(Leslie), New Glasgow and Gordon (Norma-Jean), Truro; as well as
sixteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren and his
sister-in-law, Lillian Carroll, Sherbrooke.
Dad grew up in Sherbrooke during the difficult years of The
Great Depression and World War II. Both those events played
a significant role in defining his perspective and priorities in life.
By far, the most important thing to him throughout his life was the
well being of his family. He was a devoted husband and a loving
father. By his example, he instilled in his children the
importance of family, personal integrity, working with a purpose,
thrift and providing a helping hand where one is needed. Family
gatherings for special occasions were a source of heartfelt happiness
for him.
His entire working career was spent as a dedicated employee
of Maritime Tel and Tel Co. Ltd., later known as Aliant, and
subsequently as Bell Aliant. Most of his working life was
spent in eastern Guysborough County where he was universally known as
« the telephone man ». With his unassuming nature and
fun loving personality, he made many life-long friends and delighted
in their company.
Dad took great satisfaction in being as self-reliant as
possible. He was a man of many talents and self-taught
skills. He was an excellent cook, and could turn his hand to
carpentry, plumbing, electrical and mechanical tasks. He could fix
just about anything. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, riding his
snowmobile, and in his younger years, playing hockey. Throughout his
life, but particularly during his retirement, he was a highly
accomplished and widely acclaimed gardener. During the early part of
his retirement years he also enjoyed raising beef cattle as a
hobby.
He was a member of St. Ann’s Parish, Guysborough,
for 25 years served as a member of the Guysborough Volunteer Fire
Department and also was a member of the Guysborough County
Seniors’ Housing Board. He was an avid curler at the
Chedabucto Curling Club until the age of 83 and received an Honorary
Lifetime Member Award of which he was very proud.
