James Alexander « Jim » Strachan
Strachan, James Alexander “Jim”, born October 9, 1936 in Aulds Cove, NS, died peacefully at the Victoria General Hospital on December 4, 2017. He was the son of the late William C. Strachan and Elsie (Riles) Strachan-MacAskill. Jim is survived by his wife, Mary Lou (Myers) Strachan from Sheet Harbour and his son Derek Arthur Strachan and his husband Terence Duncan Holmes, Toronto. Jim is loved by an extended family, his sister Helen (Strachan) Forbes, and her children and grandchildren, his brother Charlie’s family in New Brunswick and his family by marriage the Myers’: Tommy (dec.), Dorothy Ann, Betty Jean, Nancy, Peter, Susan and Lisa. Jim is pre-deceased by his brothers Douglas and Charlie. Following his retirement from NS Power, Jim and his wife Mary Lou spent most of their time building community at St. Catherine’s parish. He and Mary Lou ran the parish bingo for 34 years. Together they raised over 1.7 million dollars. Jim’s gift of hospitality touched many people. His parish community including the community who played Bingo was the most important part of his life as he quietly lived out a life of faith in service to those he loved. Special thanks to Monica Flynn and the palliative team at the VG. Her support over the past year allowed Jim to focus on Quality of life, find a reason to smile every day and spend time with family and friends. The compassionate care and attention Jim received from Monica and the staff of the Palliative unit has not gone unnoticed. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. Catherine of Siena parish or Victoria’s quilts, Halifax Chapter, www.victoriasquiltscanada.com. Visitation will be at The Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Road, On Wednesday, December 6, 2017, 2-4, 7-9 pm. A funeral mass will be held at St. Catherine of Siena Parish, 6476 Bayers Road, Halifax on Thursday, December 7, 2017 at 10:30am. Followed by a reception.
