It is with heavy hearts the family of Jack (John) Orland Travis announce his passing at the Saint John Regional Hospital on December 12, 2017. Jack passed peacefully, surrounded by family, following a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Newcastle, NB on March 11, 1950, Jack was the son of the late Harold and Jessie Travis. A devoted family man, Jack will be greatly missed by his wife of 46 years, Laura (Taylor) Travis of Quispamsis, his sons Fenton Travis (Nicolle) of Fredericton, and Jeremy Travis (Tabitha) of Rothesay, his grandchildren Blair, Ashton and Cameryn of Fredericton, his sister Janice Travis-Mutch (Perry) of Whitney , his brothers Bev Johnston (Alice) of Boom Road, Larry Travis (Nancy) of British Columbia, David Travis (Tammy) of New Maryland, Bruce Travis of Sillikers, and several dearly loved nieces and nephews. The former president of NBTel, Jack started with the company in his late 20’s. His ability to remember every employee’s name and his gift for listening and making people feel valued earned him a loyal following of friends over the span of his 25+ year career. Despite being a successful business man, Jack’s biggest source of pride was his beautiful family. As a father he always found time for his boys and enjoyed coaching their basketball teams. He was every bit as hands on as a grandfather and could often be found at an ice rink or at a local park enjoying time with his grandchildren. An avid salmon fisherman, Jack loved spending time on the Miramichi River. That passion was rivaled only by his love of baseball. A natural talent, he played in the Senior Men’s Baseball League for The Sillikers Lumber Kings at the young age of 15 years old.In his later years Jack became a golf enthusiast. In addition to his love of sports Jack was a fantastic story teller and he could often be heard lamenting that the art of storytelling was a lost one. Jack was known for his generosity and volunteered his time to the KV Basketball Association, The Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation, and was a board member of his alma mater, Mount Allison University. As per Jack’s wishes, rather than a funeral service, a celebration of life will be held on December 29, 2017 between 1pm and 4pm at the Kinsmen Club of the Miramichi. A few “Jack” stories will be shared around 2:00 pm. Bell’s Funeral Home in Miramichi is in charge of arrangements. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Saint John Regional Hospital and KV Extra Mural. Memorial donations can be made to The Children’s Wish Foundation or The IWK Health Centre.
