Jack A. Cutcliffe
1929-2016
As peacefully and gently as he lived, Jack passed away at the
QEH in Charlottetown, PEI, Sept. 2, 2016, age 87 years, with family by
his side. Survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Sibyl (nee
Hosking), and devoted sisters Beverly and Audrey. Forever treasured by
children Blake, Brent, Neil (Patty Palmer), Nora (Tom Graungaard), and
Kirk (Jackie); predeceased by cherished son Christopher. Proud
grandfather of Robbie (Sarah), Hattie, Jeffrey Jack, Newton,
Brynn, Tate, Dane, Cale, Elly, Reece, Sam, and Ivy; recent
great-grandfather of Olson and Wells.
Jack was the eldest of three children of Aubrey and Hattie
(nee Blake) Cutcliffe, and was raised in the small rural community of
Fredericton PEI. In his early and mid-teens, Jack spent many
hours helping at his father’s Country Store. He bought and
fed weiner pigs to market weight, starting at age 10, making enough
money by age 16 to purchase a car.
After acquiring his MSc in Agriculture at
MacDonald College (McGill Univ.) in 1954,
Jack joined the Ontario Department of Agriculture as a fruit and
vegetable agronomist. In 1962, he returned to PEI to accept a position
at the Experimental Farm in Charlottetown, where he conducted research
studies on fertilizer requirements of vegetables, including brussels
sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, and rutabaga. He published over 250
papers in various plant sciences journals, and in 1995 was awarded a
Fellowship by the Agricultural Institute of Canada, the highest award
given by this professional association.
Jack was known to all for his great integrity, unassuming
manner, sharp wit, and lifelong love of family, farming, and bridge.
He will be fondly remembered and forever missed by
many.
Visitation to be held at the Hennessey Cutcliffe
Charlottetown Funeral Home Monday, September 5 & Tuesday,
September 6 from 7-9 p.m. both evenings, with
Celebration of Life at Spring Park United Church, Charlottetown,
Wednesday, September 7 at 11 a.m. Following a reception at
the church, a private family internment will be held
at FloralHills Memorial Gardens, Pleasant Valley.
If desired, memorial donations can be made
to Camp Gencheff, at www.campgencheff.com(a camp for
children with special needs), which was dear to Jack’s
heart.
