Ingonish
Miss Irene Gettas of Ingonish, NS, died October 1, 2016, at Buchanan Memorial Hospital, Neil’s Harbour.
Born in 1918, she was originally from Simcoe, Ontario.
Becoming a permanent resident of Ingonish in 1957, she was active in youth sports promotion, the Buchanan Memorial Hospital Women’s Auxiliary, and the Neil’s Harbour Community Dental Clinic. She had a keen interest in gardening, being one of the first to introduce varieties of heather to this area.
During the Second World War she served in the Canadian Women’s Army Corps.
Irene is survived by her nephew Gregory Gettas of New York City, USA and several nieces and nephews in Ontario.
She was predeceased by her two brothers Dr. Peter Gettas and George Gettas, and her lifetime friend Mary Ross Barker of Ingonish, formerly of Toronto, Ontario.
There will be no visitation or funeral service, at her request. A private interment of ashes will take place at a later date, under the care and direction of J.M. Jobes Funeral Home. No flowers please. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
