It is with great sadness and broken hearts that we announce the passing of Helen Margaret Gerrow, 79, of Florence, on Saturday, August 13, 2016 at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Sydney Mines on December 18th, 1936, Helen was the daughter of the late Richard and Naomi (Doucette) Imrie.
Helen was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be sadly missed. She spent her children’s younger years as a stay at home mother then went on to work at both Alder Point and Leonard’s fish plant before retiring. Helen loved playing Bingo and spending time with her family. Helen also loved her dog, Bam Bam, who offered her great comfort after the passing of her husband, Norman.
Helen is survived by her children, Richard (Diane), Brenda, Betty (Melvin) MacLean, David (Jackie), Janet (Danny) Herridge and Russell (Paula), and sisters, Betty Gracie, Kay Squires, Annie MacDonald, and Naomi Imrie. She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren; Jason, Amanda, Tracey, Crystal, Vicki, Christina, Ryan, Mark, Melissa, Matthew, Danny, Jenestia, Belinda, Dillon and David, as well as her 24 great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, Helen was predeceased by her loving husband of 60 years, Norman Wilfred, and her sisters Shirley Tobin and Barbara MacLean.
The family would like to extend a thank you to the staff at the Northside General Hospital for the care she received over the past few weeks.
Visitation will take place at J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St, Sydney Mines, on Monday, August 15th, 2016 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, at 10am in Holy Family Church in Sydney Mines with Fr. JJ MacDonald officiating. Burial will follow at St. Stephen’s cemetery in Florence. A luncheon will take place at the St. Stephen’s Hall, Florence, after the service.
