Helen Langeman (nee Wiens)
1924 – 2017
Helen Wiens Langeman was born February 22, 1924 in the village of Nova Pokrowsk, Siberia, a part of Russia. She was the third of eight children born to Johann J and Helena J Wiens. At the age of 2, she migrated to Canada with her family in 1926, arriving first in Winnipeg and settling in 1927 to Morden where she spent her youth and later her retirement years.
Helen attended Morden’s Maple Leaf School. After graduating from Morden Collegiate and receiving the Governor General’s medal in 1942, she took teacher training at Winnipeg’s Normal School. Following Normal School she taught for three years at Elam School in the Thornhill, area.
During her year in Winnipeg, Helen met John Langeman, whom she then married on June 30, 1946. After a honeymoon to Kenora, the young couple farmed and lived in the Fannystelle and Culross areas of Manitoba until 1981 when they retired to Morden. They were blessed with three children. They were married for 52 years when John died in 1998. Helen was an excellent cook, baker and seamstress.
Christian faith and church were an important part of Helen’s life. At age 17 she was baptized at the Morden Bergthalar Mennonite Church where she had attended from early childhood. After marriage she was a member of the Elm Creek Mennonite Brethren Church, and in their retirement years, the Westside Community Church in Morden. She taught Sunday School, with Grades 3 & 4 being her favorite age group. She was active in Women’s Ministry Groups, serving in various capacities including Secretary and Treasurer. She also served on the hosting committee and the senior’s planning committee. She volunteered regularly at Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) thrift stores.
The last two years of her life were spent at the Dr Gendreau Memorial Personal Care Home in Ste Rose du Lac where she passed away on June 20, 2017 surrounded by her family. The family expresses deep appreciation to the staff for the excellent care she received in her final days.
Helen is survived by her three children, Ken & Marilyn; Dorothy de Vries & husband, Gerald; Eileen Klassen & husband George; seven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and three sisters. She was predeceased by her husband, parents, three brothers, and one sister.
