We regret to announce the passing of Harry Higham, 85, of Florence, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Harry passed away Friday, August 26, 2016, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Florence on December 8, 1930, he was the son of the late Charlie and Myrtle (Dewfall) Higham.
Harry was a coal miner for many years, working for Devco in Princess, Prince and Florence Collieries.
Harry leaves behind to mourn his soulmate and best friend for the last 22 years, Lorraine Nugent, his children; Maureen (Ross) Jessome, Lynn (Robert) Jardine, Harry (Shannon), Tommy (Gale), and Shawn (Tracey). He also leaves behind his grandchildren; Karen (Stephen) Fraser, Janice (Shane) Downey, Daniel Jessome, Stacey (Dave) Clarke, Angela (Blaise) MacDonald, Marissa Osborne, Kristin (Adam) MacIntyre, Thomas Higham, Kyle MacMullin, Shawna MacMullin, and Celine MacMullin, great-grandchildren Lauren, Alex, Cameron, Julia, Andrew, Leah, Aaron, Jason, Jessica, Jalyn, Gavin, Keigan, Abbigale and Ava, sisters Lorraine Nicholson, Sylvia (Mickey) MacMullin, step-children Lorraine and Kevin O’Keefe, Michael and Yvonne Nugent, Paul (Audrey) Nugent, Joanne (John) Sexsmith, and many nieces and nephews. He will also be greatly missed by Steven Nugent, and Billy and Bernie Blinkhorn.
Besides his parents, Harry was predeceased by his wife Pearl (Jardine) Higham, son Charles in infancy, brother Evie (Geraldine), nephews Michael MacMullin and Chuck Higham, nieces Ronalda Bowne and Jackie Ramsdale, and step-son Blair Nugent.
There will be no visitation. A celebration of Harry’s life will be held on Monday, August 29, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. in St. Matthew-Wesley United Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Nancy Ritchie officiating. The burial will be in Brookside Cemetery, Sydney Mines. In lieu of flowers, donations in Harry’s memory may be made to the Diabetes Society, or the Palliative Care at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
