(Thomas) Harold Mullins (74) died peacefully at Extendicare Monday, July 11th, 2016 after a long struggle with cancer. Harold was surrounded by his loving family, friends and caregivers. Born November 6, 1941 in Kirkland Lake to Mickey and Bella (O’Grady) Mullins, Harold was the eldest of 6 children. An altar boy at Holy Name, a paper route with his brothers, and a lifeguard at the Fifth St. pool, Harold kept busy. As a young boy, he took violin lessons and practiced diligently. As a teen and young man, he played the fiddle at many square dances. Indeed, even into his later years, Harold’s appreciation for music was evident to all who knew him. A strong student, Harold attended Holy Name School and KLCVI in Kirkland Lake. He completed his undergrad Bachelor of Arts at the University of Western Ontario (’64) and his Masters of Education at the University of Toronto (’69). Harold became a teacher, working at both the elementary and college levels in various locations throughout Ontario. Although Harold fought a bipolar disorder, his unfaltering love and concern for his family and friends remained constant. A proud father, grandfather and uncle, he often shared news of his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews and their accomplishments. He was a man, who loved the arts, music, conversation, northern nature and a good piece of chocolate! He always enjoyed a good western; and, he loved to wear his cowboy hat, boots, and bolo tie. Harold had a unique skill of not only remembering everyone’s name, but also connecting and weaving the history of people’s lives into conversation. He spent a great deal of time socializing and woodworking at the Encore Club. He always enjoyed a good game of crib … not to mention bingo! Predeceased by his parents, infant sister Norma and his son Blaise Mullins (in 2012), Harold is survived by his 2 daughters Liisa (John) Wilkinson and Ida Mullins both of Vancouver, and 5 grandchildren: Ben, David, Anna, and Sam Wilkinson, and Sara Stephenson; the mother of his children, Maija Mullins; his siblings Ambrose (Gail), Don (Diane), and Judy McLeod all of Kirkland Lake, and Stan (Jane) of Mississauga; and, many nieces and nephews. A special thank you to staff and volunteers at Extendicare – Harold enjoyed the many activities during his time there. In addition, the family is grateful to Nora Barker and the Palliative Care Team for their support during the past difficult weeks.
