Gerald Thompson Sutherland 1931-2016 It is with great sadness that the family of Gerald Sutherland announces his peaceful passing at home on Sunday, July 24th, 2016. He was born on January 20th, 1931 in Fredericton, NB to the late Roy and Essie (Price) Sutherland and was the beloved husband of Catherine (McDonald) Sutherland. After graduating from FHS in 1949, Gerald attended UNB for one year and in January of 1951, he left New Brunswick to join the Royal Canadian Air Force. When he was not selected to be a pilot, he left the RCAF and went to work at A.V. Roe Canada, AVRO, Canada’s aircraft manufacturer in Malton, Ontario. He was the parts expediter and from his office window he viewed the construction of the model of the AVRO Arrow. In 1956, he returned to New Brunswick and on July 6, 1956, he opened Sutherlands Garage, at the intersection of Lincoln Road and McFadzen Lane. In 1962, Sutherlands was moved to 336 Lincoln Road. During his business years, Gerald was proud to sell and service all Honda products plus Mazda, Toyota, Jeep, Bombardier, OMC, Homelite, Pioneer, Scott, Pleasure Way motorhomes and airplanes. He always credited his success to his knowledgeable, hard-working, and dedicated staff and his loyal customers. Gerald lived life to the fullest, flying for 25 years as far north as the Arctic Ocean and south to Mexico. He lived for his annual fishing trips to Labrador, trips to his camp on Sinclair Lake, RV trips and trips to visit with his Miramichi cousins. Gerald was a well-respected businessman and an accomplished entrepreneur but most of all, Gerald was a great ambassador of Fredericton. He believed that we live in the best place in the world, and he was proud and privileged to give back to his community both financially and with his time. His philanthropic contributions can be seen all over our fine city and province. Gerald will be missed by his loving wife, Catherine; his sister Irma Hughes’ children, Ellen Lynn and Nancy (Keith); his brother-in-law, Jim MacMillan of Fredericton, NB and his children, Peter (Sandi) and Reid (David); and his late brother’s children, Wendy and Bruce Sutherland. He will also be missed by his mother-in-law, Tina McDonald; his dear Aunt Freeda (Edmund) Price and his special great nephews, David and Brian Lenihan, many great nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents; first wife, Pearl (Coates) Sutherland; his sister, Laura MacMillan; brother, Donald Sutherland; sister, Irma Hughes; brother-in-law, Lawrence Hughes; special nephew and long-time business partner, Donald J. Lenihan; special great nephew, Stephen P. Lenihan, and his good friend and father-in-law, Louis McDonald. There will be no visitation by request. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s United Church on Saturday, August 13th, 2016 at 2:00 pm. Pastor Sarah Magie will officiate, assisted by Rev. Monte Peters. Interment will take place at a later date in the Fredericton Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes in Gerald’s honour may be made to the UNB Gerald Sutherland Bursary, St. Paul’s Building Fund, Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital Foundation or to the Canadian Red Cross. www.mcadamsfh.com
