Obituary Gerald Joseph Meyer, 92, of Edmonton, Alberta, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 2, 2016 at the Sturgeon Community General Hospital in St. Albert, Alberta. Gerry was born in Formosa, Bruce County, Ontario on October 9, 1923 to Linus and Rosetta Meyer. When he was a young boy, his family moved to rural Alberta to pursue their traditional farming life. His career took him to Edmonton, where he met and married the love of his life, Alice. It was here that they raised their family. Gerry valued time spent with his beloved and extensive family. He was a passionate “farm boy” who enjoyed the automotive world, sports, travel, tinkering and fixing things. If there was a “better way” to make something work Gerry would find it. He was a hockey goalie in the era of pond hockey, newspaper shin pads and no helmets. He made a considerable mark in the bowling alley and at the curling rink, was a founding member of the Ottewell Curling Club in Edmonton and participated in numerous local, provincial and national curling competitions. Gerry drew much enjoyment from golfing, hunting and fishing with friends and family members. Gerry was extremely loving, and so very proud of his children: Ronald (Dianne Flynn), Valerie (Ken) Crutchfield, Robert, Diane (Dan) Needham, and Barbara. He treasured his 8 grandchildren: Adam (Briar), Ben, and Lucas (Angela) Crutchfield, Dorian Needham (Malcolm Dort), Aurea and Jessa Flynn, and Carmen and Evan Jacobson; and four very playful great-grandchildren: Rowan, William, Morgan and Blair Crutchfield. He is also survived by his sisters: Eileen Meyer, Rita Pare, and Mabel Powell; and brothers: Oscar and Lorne; as well as many loving nieces and nephews. Gerry was pre-deceased by his loving wife and best friend, Alice (nee Johnston) in 2008; and siblings: Francis, Alfred, Marie, and Clair. Gerry’s family wishes to convey their deep gratitude to the nursing staff on Unit 19 at the Sturgeon Community General Hospital in St. Albert for their attentive and compassionate care during his final days. The family would also like to thank Dr. Prudencio Perez for his many years of dedication and attention to Gerry’s well being. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made to a charity or cause of one’s choice. There will be an opportunity to pay your respects to the family at Connelly-McKinley Funeral Home in St. Albert on Thursday, July 7 at 7:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Albert Catholic Parish on Friday, July 8, at 11:00 am, 7 St. Vital Avenue in St. Albert.
