George MacLeod – 2017

In Loving Memory of George A. MacLeod
March 1, 1946 – March 30, 2017
October 1967, while attending a dance where George was the lead singer in the band The Raiders, I met the love of my life. George charmed me with his beautiful voice and crystal blue eyes. We fell in love, married in 1971 and started immediately building our life together in Alder Point. As a loving husband, we quickly started a family. He was the proud father to all his children where he taught and guided them everyday.
Leaving behind his legacy and most important treasures are his wife Charlina, his best friend of 46 years; daughter Shauna (Robert) Millar, grand dog Digby, Markham ON; and son George Robert, granddaughters Ava and Julia MacLeod, Coxheath; which made him so proud to be called « poppy ». George was also the proud father of daughter Carolyn (David) Nicholson, Ships Harbor NS; grandchildren Kyle (Stephanie) and great granddaughter Sadie; Ryan and great-granddaughters Ryliegh and Carliegh; Kaila Cheverie all from Halifax.
Born in Brasd’or, he was the beloved son of the late John J and Catherine (Swan) McLeod; mother in law Marguerite and the late Tremaine Deveaux. He is survived by siblings, Florence Moylan; Chatherine (Richard) Spezzano; Marilyn Ford all from Connecticut; Kimberly (Urban) Day; John (Cleo); Pat all from Brasd’or; Din Alder Point; Dan (Sharon) SS Boularderie; Larry (Sharon) Sydney; Reggie Sydney Mines. Also aunt Bridget and uncle Reggie, Mill Creek and the entire extended MacLeod and Deveaux family and loyal friends. He is predeceased by one sister Anna and husband Glenn Harvey, N Carolina; brother Jimmy; sister in law Linda all from Brasd’or; brother in law Charles Ford and Tom Moylan Connecticut.
George started out operating a small canteen in Brasd’or, then started sailing on the Lake Boats, but hated being away from his family. He worked in the Laborers Union, and retired from the Carpenters Union Local 1588 as a drywaller. Dedicated and hardworking he never missed a day of work. Even after retiring he would always say he would love to go back to work. George also worked for the District 2 Police where he was sworn in by the RCMP as a Special Constable. Lateness was never an option for anything he did.
George loved music, from playing lead singer in The Raiders, Night Time Magic and Blue Sky to name a few, to becoming a DJ with his son. He always took pride in his music and loved playing for many benefit dances, especially for children. He was a member of Florence Legion Branch 19; Army Navy Brasd’Or; past president of Alder Point Community Development; Cub Scout’s Leader and member of St. Anne’s parish church. He loved volunteering his time to numerous events and charities. George volunteered his time with metal detecting with the RCMP for the 1992 Sydney River McDonald’s Restaurant investigation.
Salmon fishing, hunting, darts, horseshoes, metal detecting where he searched for lost treasure, cooking his enormous library of recipes especially his famous spaghetti and meatballs. He could build or fix anything and was always offering to help anyone who needed it. To keep fit he was the Captain of the Army Navy Ball team (Pirates) winning many championships. You could always see him walking at home where he would pray for all his family and friends with each round. He loved to take long drives to see family and friends in Canada and US.
If you knew him well, you knew he always worried about everyone. He was a true believer in St. Anne who looked over him during his courageous 5 year battle with Cancer. Eventually George surrendered peacefully with his family by his side and his wife holding his hand. No one is ever ready to loose their loved one but we are at peace knowing he passed on his terms, and received his deserving angle wings to watch over us.
The family would like to thank Dr. R Pahil, Dr. W Sharieff and all staff at CBRH Cancer unit. A special thanks to Dr. John Kirkpatrick and staff for exceptional care. North Side Harbor View ER Department and 4th Floor West staff, Palliative care and the VON for their compassion. All the family and friends for the support who visited, called, made food and prayed for our family. Father Peter McLeod for his visits and prayers.
There will be no viewing as cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life will take place at St. Anne’s Church, Alder Point on Thursday, April 6 at 2pm, with Father Peter McLeod officiating. Following the service will be a lunch at Alder Point Hall. Arrangements are entrusted to Jobes Funeral Home. Donations in Georges memory may be made to a charity of choice.
