Obituary Overview
Francis « Frank » M. Murphy
Francis (Frank) Michael Murphy: Died October 20, 2017, Age 93, peacefully in the Palliative Care Unit at Ocean View Manor. A life full of adventure, construction, laughter, generosity, faith and love has to come to an end, at least until we meet him again. Born March 9, 1924, Frank attended Alexander McKay School and St. Joseph’s Church in the North End of Halifax. At an early age his work career started with Bianco Brothers and Brookfield Construction and Frank was an apprentice carpenter, working on many buildings and paving the streets of Halifax. Soon after, a higher calling was in order as Frank enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces and was soon off to training at CFB Greenwood, which was the starting point for an amazing 27 year career that took him to Trenton, Chatham, Winnipeg, Flin Flon, Lahr, Alert, England, Tuktayuktok and perhaps his favorite posting Cold Lake Alberta, where he and his great friend and commanding officer Bill Mosher oversaw the building of the air range.
When home on leave, Frank would fill in friends and neighbours about his great adventures, and he never came empty handed! The arrival of Frank and his travel chest was always a source of great excitement for friends, relatives and Canada Customs officials!! Uncle Frank was likely the biggest importer of German made trains, trolls, candy, cigars, ceramic figurine heads and high end watches in all of Canada during his posting in Lahr, Germany from 1968-70
Frank’s retirement from the Air Force in 1975 heralded the start of his second career with the Department of National Defense, both at the dockyard and the Bedford Magazine. Once again Frank made many great friends with those that he met while on the job. It was during this time, now settled back in Halifax, Frank married Eileen MacNeil on August 13, 1977 which started Frank’s greatest and most rewarding life adventure. They were the perfect pair, she was small, he was tall, and Eileen was as good a listener as Frank was a storyteller. They took many trips to PEI, where they were known on Cavendish Beach by their signature towels, and to Cape Breton to visit relatives. Another memorable trip was entertaining their great friends from England, Stan and Vera Saunders, taking them to Gaspe Bay and the Cabot Trail.
Frank’s generosity was matched by Eileen’s pie making ability, as many pies, muffins and baked treats were delivered all over Halifax and Dartmouth to cheer people up, make their day a little happier or as Frank would say, “Make it right with ya.” Frank would don his Bo the Clown outfit and go to the IWK armed with multiple boxes of chocolates to cheer up sick children and treat the nurses with chocolates as a thank you for all their caring and hard work. Steele Chrysler was another favorite stopping place for Frank, talking with everyone and dropping off treats. He bought so many cars there he should have been a fleet customer! With no children of their own, many nieces, nephews, friends and relatives were the recipient of both Frank and Eileen’s incredible generosity.
In later years, as Frank’s mobility and health were in decline, it was the super human strength of Eileen and her love of Frank that kept him in his beloved home on Kaye Street, close to his Murphy relatives and life- long friends. When the time came, Frank moved into the Skyview Neighborhood, 4th floor Ocean View Manor and received care, compassion, smiles and warmth of the highest order. Words cannot fully express how much this level of care was appreciated over the last 17 months of Frank’s life.
Frank is survived by his wife Eileen, numerous nieces and nephews, and was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was predeceased by his parents Walter and Catherine (Spence), brothers Walter, Joseph and Edward, sisters Mary and Catherine. A Mass of Christian burial will take place on Wednesday, October 25th at 11 a.m., Saint Mother Teresa of Kolkata (formerly St. Stephen’s Church), 6032 Normandy Drive, Halifax. Reception immediately following service. Cremation has taken place. No flowers by request.
