Elsie Meier (nee Telke)
February 23, 1934 – November 21, 2016
It is with sorrow that we announce Elsie’s death at Betel Home, in Selkirk, MB. Elsie was born in Lonke, Poland and emigrated from Germany to Canada in 1954 to be re-united with her parents and siblings in Portage La Prairie. Elsie said she thoroughly enjoyed the trip over to Canada. She felt that she met many people and enjoyed the social aspect of the trip. However when she arrived in Portage La Prairie she was devastated and couldn’t wait to earn enough money so that she could go back. This feeling didn’t last long as she soon met and married Stan Grosse and had two daughters.
Elsie was a fabulous baker (German Torte), cook and seamstress (dressing her daughters in haute couture). She did all this while she held down a full time job; her last employment was 13 years with Northern Telecom (NorTel). She truly was a super-mom.
In 1977 she met Kurt Meier and they were married in 1982. Soon after they retired and spent their time between Beaconia, MB and Mercedes, TX. until Kurt’s death in 1997. Although Elsie missed him greatly, she continued going to Texas every winter where she had made numerous friends and enjoyed competitive shuffle board. She spent her summers at the cottage picking blueberries, mushrooms and entertaining many friends and family.
Predeceased by her parents Robert and Olga, and siblings Henry, Reinhold, Erwin, Martha and Irene. Elsie will always be remembered by her daughters Beatrice Michaluk (Brian) and Carmen Grosse (Ian Coombe) and Kurt’s daughters Sylvia Perry, Brigitte Meier, and Doris Woolley (David). She will also be missed by her grandchildren – Stephen (Sarah), Megan (Everet), Jaclyn and Laura (Alex) and great-grandchildren Alexander, Annika, Logan, Jack and Penelope. Elsie will be forever missed by her remaining siblings Irma, Frieda (Paul), Erika (John), Waltraud (Bob) and Inge (Charles). She also leaves cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
A special thanks to Dr. Demsas for his kind and compassionate care, thank you to the Betel Home Staff as well.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, November 28, 2016 in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Deborah Vitt officiating.
