Effie Ann (MacDonald) Courtney – 2017

Effie Ann Courtney
89, Cape North
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Effie Ann Courtney, 89, on Sunday, March 19, 2017, at Buchanan Memorial Hospital, Neil’s Harbour.
Born on April 8, 1927 in Big Intervale, she was the daughter of the late Sam and Katie (Fraser) MacDonald. Mom married the man of her dreams, Norman John Courtney, on November 19, 1946. They settled in Cape North to raise a family of three children and enjoyed 67 years together. One of Mom’s favourite times of year was summer, when she and Dad had all the family together in Cape North at their house. Her kitchen would smell of fresh baked goods every morning as she always made everyone’s favourite. She loved a good laugh and stomping her feet to fiddle music, or playing a game of cards. Mom also liked to pass the time with her crossword puzzles or knitting a new pair of socks or mittens. She was so proud of her grandchildren that her living room was full of photos, and she would often tell stories of each of their accomplishments from her rocking chair. Mom was a very dedicated volunteer to her community and church for many years, serving as organist at Cape North United Church. She was a member of the Hannah MacLeod UCW, and a board member on the Cape North Hospital Auxiliary. Mom also enjoyed volunteering her time to help out in the kitchen at Highland Manor. It was a very proud moment for her when she was chosen as citizen of the year in 1995.
Left behind to mourn are her children Norma (Bob) Bebluk, Bruce (Corinne) Courtney, and Candis (Hal) Bungay, and her grandchildren Courtney (Tim), Kim (Mike), Damon (Jessica), Logan, Brenan and Alana.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by our father Norman, and her half-brother Mike Fitzgerald.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date, when family can all come home to Cape North. Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to the staff at Buchanan Memorial Hospital and Highland Manor who showed great kindness and compassion throughout Mom’s stay with them. Donations in Mom’s memory may be made to Highland Manor, Neil’s Harbour. Words of comfort may be forwarded to her family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com
