Edward Michel Lakusta – 2017

Obituary Overview
Lovingly Remembered
LAKUSTA, Edward Michel
1930 – 2017
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Edward Michel Lakusta beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, on November 15, 2017. Edward is survived by his daughter Judy and husband Ward Martin as well as his daughter-in-law Linda Lakusta. He was greatly adored by his six grandchildren, Tracey, Christopher, Casi, Kayla, Kirstyn, Katie and five great-grandchildren, Chloe, Avery, Max, Sam, Noah and Sloan as well as many extended relatives and friends. He was pre-deceased by his wife, Gloria in 2015 and his son Douglas in 2017.
Edward was born in the village of Opal Alberta, June 27th, 1930 to his parents, Mike and Helen Lakusta. He was the oldest of four children including, Mary, Russell and Victor. Right after High School he got a job in the oilfields with British America. Determined to succeed beyond the level of oilfield worker, he enrolled at Mount Royal College, where he studied petroleum engineering. With this preliminary training, he successfully applied to the University of Oklahoma from which he graduated in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering. He met and married, Gloria in 1954.
By 1976 Edward had risen to the position of manager and production at Gulf Oil. His career with Gulf spanned 30 years and took him to Houston, Texas, where he was senior vice-president in charge of manufacturing. Edward was named President and Chief Operating Officer of Petro-Canada in 1982.
During the years that he spent leading Petro Canada it has been said that, “He was clearly the leader who made the transformation of the Petro Canada Brand to a respected and much appreciated petroleum company.” During that time Edward worked hard to improve the lives of people in the Calgary community through volunteering with the Calgary Stampede, the Stampeders Football Club and United Way. In 1989 he chaired the United Way. He was instrumental in involving Petro- Canada in the Olympic Torch Relay. After retiring, he remained active in the oil patch by chairing two annual Oilmen’s Tournaments. Edward is an inductee in the Canadian Petroleum Hall of Fame.
Edward was an active and avid outdoorsman. Upon retirement Edward was able to truly pursue his life passions of fishing, hunting, riding and golfing. He was well known for his infamous hunting, fishing stories and wild game dinners. Edward had a strong sense of values, and strove to keep family connected to ensure the relationships continued to build through the generations. His joy came from seeing these relationships flourish. He was actively involved in his grandchildren’s lives and leaves a legacy for them to carry forward. He experienced sheer joy in seeing some of his great grandchildren be born and share in their young lives.
The hardest part of losing someone isn’t necessarily having to say goodbye, but rather learning to live without them, always having to fill the void, the emptiness that’s left inside your heart when they go. Edward will be missed by all, loved forever and an inspiration to all of us. We love you. Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Shankle and health care personnel at Wentworth Manor for their extraordinary care and compassion. We would also like to extend a special thank you to Kurt Velosa who not only provided companion care but truly cared for Edward in his last days with us.
A Funeral service will be held in the Chapel of Eden Brook Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire donations can be made in Edward’s name to the Children’s Wish Foundation.
