Earla Charlene Buell

Earla Charlene Buell
1948-2016
After an extended stay at the Provincial Palliative Care Centre, where
she received exceptional care, Earla passed away on Tuesday, May 31,
2016 at the age of 68 years. She will be sadly missed and lovingly
remembered by her family. Beloved daughter of the late Earl and Lilla
(Kennedy) Buell; dear sister of Dorothy Hicks (Malcolm) and Blair
(Marion); loving aunt to nieces Melva Buell (Jeff), Debi Buell
(Claude), Veronica Hicks (Grant), Corlee Buell, Carolyn MacKinnon
(Kevin) and Charlotte Velazco (José) and nephews Randy Hicks
(Betty Ann) and Jeffrey Buell (Thelma). Also survived by several
great-nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her sister-in-law Jane
Buell, nephew Rodney Buell, brother Athol and niece Charlene Hicks.
Earla was a free spirit who loved to socialize. Her zest and joy for
life experiences were shared with family and her wide range of great
friends. She had a special knack for planning and organizing events
and get-togethers, large and small, for family members and
friends.
Her final great get-together was her “Hootenanny
Unplugged” at the Palliative Care Centre. She had many artists
among her friends who came to perform for her. She was so grateful for
the complete support of staff in presenting this fun evening of music,
food, and camaraderie for her friends, family, and other residents.
Earla’s creative energy and talents were known to many through
her work as a professional art framer, leather worker and designer.
She operated her own shop, Picture It Yours, for many years where she
did beautiful custom framing and leather work. She also sold a wide
variety of beautiful artwork and wares, both her own and by other
artists. She was generous with her expertise and had great plans for
sharing her gifts of leather work, drawing, and painting with folks at
Palliative Care.
She was keen on travelling and experiencing new adventures. At age
sixteen, she borrowed her Dad’s new car and took her fourteen
year old niece on a trip to New York City. There, they visited the
Empire State Building and many other well-known attractions in that
city. She also spent several months traveling through Europe with her
good friend Anne Shirley Sutherland, who she first met in university.
They travelled from Italy to Spain and places in between, then on to
England and Scotland. She travelled to all provinces in Canada as well
as the Yukon. She then went on to tour the western United States and
Mexico.
Earla and Dorothy vacationed for two activity-filled weeks in Jamaica:
river rafting, swimming, climbing Dunn River Falls. A few years later
they travelled to Paradise Island and Nassau, Bahamas with their
mother. Every day was filled to capacity and the highlight of their
trip was swimming with the dolphins. She was a wonderful travel
companion. Earla so enjoyed nature and spent many hours exploring the
outdoors. She especially loved the beaches on PEI.
Earla loved sports, whether as a participant or as a spectator. When
she was a student at Summerside High, she was involved in various
sports and was a very good field hockey player. She was a member of
the Summerside Majorettes for several years. The group performed in
the Summerside Lobster Carnival parade and at many other venues. The
friendships formed lasted a lifetime. Her latest venture into sports
came after her retirement when she joined the Pickleball players in
Stratford. There she made many new and valued friends who were more
than willing to share tips on playing the game.
Earla had a very strong faith. As a child, she regularly attended
church and Sunday school and, as a teenager, she was quite involved in
CGIT. At the time of her death, she was an Elder at Park Royal United
Church. In discussing the progress of her disease with her one day,
she said that when the end came she was looking forward to being in
Paradise.
Earla was a wonderful daughter, sister, aunt, and friend and we will
all dearly miss her joy of life and infectious laughter.
Resting at Belvedere Funeral Home from where the memorial service will
be held in the funeral home chapel on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. No
visitation by her request. Interment in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
Memorial donations may be made to the Provincial Palliative Care
Centre or Park Royal United Church.
