Obituary Overview
Dr. Albert Hohol
It is with sadness the family wishes to announce the peaceful passing of our father and grandfather, Dr. Albert (Bert) Edward Hohol, on Friday November 17, 2017 at 94. He will be greatly missed by his children Milt (Linda) and Barb, grandchildren Christopher (Jillian) and Taralyn. And as well, brother John, sisters in law Irene and Mary and many relatives and friends.
Bert was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Katherine, in 2008 and brothers William, Nick, David, John at birth, sister Anne and parents Harry and Mary.
Bert was born in Szypentitz, Alberta. His grade schooling was in Shypentitz with high school in Two Hills. Post-secondary education for his B. Ed, and M. Ed was at the University of Alberta with his doctorate at the University of Oregon. From a one room school to a Ph.D.
Bert’s career included service with the RCAF, teaching, school administration, superintendent of schools, Provincial MLA and Cabinet Minister, and Deputy Chairman of the Workers’ Compensation Board. His life focused upon social science as a person concerned with society and the relationships and betterment among individuals within our society. This was exemplified by his education, career, volunteering, mentoring and his ongoing dedicated service and honoring of his fellow man throughout his life. His exceptional work ethic and sharing of his time and helpfulness was well known, respected and greatly appreciated.
Bert was a notable and consistent volunteer to organizations and boards at local, provincial, national and international levels. These included multi-culture, sport, education, public service, and with St. Andrew’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church. He was recognized with numerous awards, including the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Metal Award, acknowledging his efforts and successes. He was also instrumental in the creation of the Institute of Ukrainian Studies at the University of Alberta.
During his later years, he focused upon family and in particular the grandchildren. He concentrated his volunteer energies at St Andrew’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church sitting on numerous committees. He enjoyed contributing to and spending time at the church with members, other volunteers and was greatly appreciative of the fellowship and support he received. He particularly enjoyed assisting the priest during services.
Bert had many hobbies with his main love and passion being reading. He was voracious in his desire to read anything and everything he got his hands upon, which he did throughout his life. He loved many sports as a participant and coach including umpiring semiprofessional baseball. Watching sports, in particular, hockey, baseball and Stampede Wrestling were priorities with Laurence Welk.
Bert was proud of his Ukrainian heritage and never forgot his roots. He treated all persons as equals.
Bert was a kind, friendly, good natured, humorous and caring individual and foremost, he was a loving family man who will much be missed by Milt, Linda, Barb, Christopher, Jillian and Taralyn and numerous relatives and colleagues. Fun times at home, the farms at Vegreville and Two Hills, Wizard Lake and Lake Windermere and, and travel with family, relatives and friends will forever remain with us.
Gramps was a star. His star will shine forever in the minds, hearts and souls of his family for the rest of their lives.
Dad loved his apartment and time at Laurier House Lynwood where his resided the last two years. Special thanks to Managers Wendy and Sheri, Doctor Gee, nurses, LPN’s, caregivers, kitchen ladies, cleaning folks and Alan in maintenance. Companions Deedith, Louella, and Maxine were lovely dinner company and enjoyed sharing conversations with Dad.
Prayers will be held Sunday, November 26th at 7:00 pm and Funeral rite is Monday, November 27th at 10:30 am at St. Andrew’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church – 9831 – 75 Street. Father Yuriy Suchevan officiating.
Interment is at Westlawn Cemetery, 16310 Stony Plain Road.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St Andrew’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church or to a charity of your choice.
