It is with great sadness the family of Doug Sargent announces his sudden yet peaceful passing on Saturday, December 12, 2015. Doug was predeceased by his parents Carlie and Margaret Sargent; parents-in-law Jack and Winona Williams; brother-in-law John Williams; great-nephew Carter McEachern; and daughter-in-law Darcey (Rempel) Sargent. He is survived by his loving wife Linda; son Shane; daughter Jodi (Shawn) Rusaw; precious grandchildren Zoe Sargent, Alexander, Kale and Andrew Rusaw; brother John (Liz) Sargent; sister Linda Sargent; nephew Chris (Jenn) and Sadie Sargent, niece Sara (Dan) and Wade McEachern; sisters-in-law Violet Williams and Emma (George) Ghattas; a very special « chosen » daughter Shawna Brewster; one remaining aunt Mildred Wilson; as well as several cousins and their families. Doug was a caring husband, a compassionate father, a doting grandfather, and will be lovingly remembered by friends and family. Douglas (Doug) Warren Sargent was born August 7, 1946 in Moosomin, SK to Carlie and Margaret Sargent. Doug retired in the summer of 2008 from a long and rewarding career with SGI. Throughout his years with SGI, he and his family called several Saskatchewan cities ‘home’ – including Yorkton, Estevan, Lloydminster and, lastly, Regina where his career had begun more than 40 years earlier. While living in Yorkton and in Estevan, Doug was involved with both the Yorkton Terriers and the Estevan Bruins of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. He enjoyed a good game of golf, was a voracious reader, and spent hours tirelessly researching and documenting his family’s history. Since his retirement, Doug enjoyed working in the yard or on a project in his shop, sharing breakfast out with Linda, or meeting up with friends for coffee. Grandpa Doug was the biggest fan of his 4 grandchildren attending as many of their activities as he could, be it for soccer, drumming, karate, track, marksmanship, wrestling, a band or drama performance, or volunteering for fundraising events with Zoe’s Cadet Squadron. It didn’t take more than a word of encouragement for him to proudly show a photo or tell a story about one of their accomplishments or funny antics! You can shed tears that he is gone, or you can smile because he has lived. You can close your eyes and pray that he’ll come back, or you can open your eyes and see all he’s left. Your heart can be empty because you can’t see him, or you can be full of the love you shared. You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday, or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can remember him only that he is gone, or you can cherish his memory and let it live on. You can cry and close your mind, or you can do what he’d want: Smile, open your eyes, love and go on. -David Harkins Out of respect for Doug’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. The family would like to thank family and friends for all of their support. Special thanks to Doug’s cousin, Norma Wilson of Regina Funeral Home, for her invaluable help and guidance at this most difficult time. Donations in memory of Doug may be made to The Children’s Hospital Foundation of Saskatchewan at https://childrenshospitalsask.ca/how-to-help/donate/donate-now/.
