Curtis Fenton Brown
1923-2016
Curtis Fenton
Brown (age 92) passed away at The Grand Manan Nursing Home on
Thursday, September 1st, 2016. Born on December 20, 1923 on Wood
Island, Grand Manan Island, NB, he was the son of the late Heber T.
Brown and Josie M. (Green) Brown.
Curtis will
be sadly missed by his family: daughters Gail Steeves (Dave) of
Riverview, NB and Cynthia Brown of Hillsborough, NB, brothers Beverley
Brown (Belva) of Seal Cove, NB and Keith (Eulah) of Sussex, NB,
sister–in–law Lauren McLaughlin of Saint John, NB
as well as many nieces, nephews and
friends.
Besides his
parents, Curtis was predeceased by his loving wife of 51 Years,
(Zelma) Jeanne (McLaughlin) Brown; brothers Maurice Brown and Graydon
Brown; sisters Faye Cook and Doris Zwicker; five
brothers–in–law, two
sisters–in–law as well as his two faithful
friends, Nils Kling (Linda) and Lucky.
Curtis was
retired since 1988 when he sold his retail business (currently Grand
Isle Drug Store). In his earlier years, he was a Farmer and Draft
Horse Team Driver. Then, he was a Fisherman for over 20 years, owning
and operating the herring seiner, « Golden Dawn »,
until shortly after he bought the store.
Curtis was an
avid outdoorsman, enjoying his camp at Millers Pond, hunting, fishing,
4 wheeling, cutting wood and gardening. He and his wife, Jeanne, also
loved travelling with their truck and fifth wheel, taking cruises and,
most of all, their trip to Switzerland. However, Curtis was always
glad to come back to his beloved island. He loved the place and he
loved the people and gave both his full support throughout his life.
He always said, « Why would you ever want to live anywhere
else? »
A man of
faith, Curtis was a faithful member of the North Head Baptist Church.
Also, a faithful Rotarian, he was made a « Paul Harris
Fellow » and received a Lifetime Membership from the Grand
Manan Rotary Club. In 1969, Curtis saved the life of a 2 year old girl
who was trapped in her home by fire. For his bravery, he was awarded
the Royal Canadian Humane Association silver medal as well as a bronze
medal from the Carnegie Hero Fund
Commission.
Everyone who
knew Curtis will miss his keen sense of humor, teasing, entertaining
stories, generosity and kindness.
Visiting and
Reception will take place at The North Head Baptist Church on Friday,
September 2th, 2016 from 7 to 9pm. A celebration of
Curtis’ life will be held from the Church on Saturday,
