Obituary for Clara English
On Wednesday, September 13, 2017, Clara Beatrice English (nee Allum), known as « Queenie », passed away in her 101 year, at Fairview Home. It is with great sadness that the family announce her passing as our dear mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother of five generations. Clara was born on June 4, 1917 south of Oak Lake, Manitoba, and attended Runnymede School. She worked hard as a young person splitting a cord of wood with her brother Bert before walking 4 miles to school each day. Clara survived a bad fire the family had in the thirties, where they lost everything along with a stepbrother. She worked at several farms as a housekeeper before coming to Harding to work for the Shuttleworth’s, where she met her love, Emerson English. They were married on April 14, 1937. Clara and Emerson started farming north of Harding and in 1945 bought the home farm from Guy and Annie English and moved there spending many wonderful years. They sold their home and moved to Brandon to live on 1st Street; 26th Street, then to Colonial Estates for 14 years in 1991. Mother spent her last number of years living at Fairview Home. Throughout her years on the farm, Clara enjoyed her huge garden, canning and raising chickens to sell each year. She loved to crochet and knit afghans for her family and also made three quilts for her grandchildren. When they moved to Brandon she became an avid gardener with her many beautiful flowers and vegetable garden, pressing her flowers and printing poems in her very unique printing and writing that no one can duplicate and everyone loved having them for keepsakes. Mom was a wonderful cook and baker and could make recipes up out of her head. She and dad attended Bethel Temple Church in Brandon through the years, she loved her God and lived a good Christian life. Clara is survived by her son Elwood (Lynne) English; daughter Elspeth Denbow; grandchildren Shelley (Doss) Mayor, Debbie Denbow, and Darcy Denbow; great grandchildren Kelley (Curtis) McGowan, Shanda (Neil) Harris, and Brad Denbow; great great grandchildren Emmie, Luke and Lincoln McGowan, and Nolan and Preston Harris. Also surviving are two step-brothers, Cecil (Mavis) Allum and George Allum. She was predeceased by her loving husband Emerson of 63 years in 2000, her father Thomas Allum in 1953, mother Maud in 1928 all of Oak Lake; four sisters Hazel, Laura, Gladys, Florence; six brothers, Charlie, Bill, Ted, Bert, Fred, and Dick; step mother Florence; step brothers Harry and Henry, Doreen and son-in-law Allan Denbow. Clara will be laid to rest in a private graveside ceremony on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at the Greenwood Cemetery, Harding, Manitoba. Donations in memory of Clara may be made to the Greenwood Cemetery, Box 104, Kenton, Manitoba R0M 0Z0. We thank Memories Chapel for the wonderful care and arrangements. Thank you also to Fairview Home Staff for their loving care of mother over the years and to everyone for their phone calls, flowers, cards and food items. All were very much appreciated.
« Rest in peace with dad, Mom – you have more than earned it. »
We will miss you every day – Your loving family.
