It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Colette Carroll nee Filion on January 6, 2017 after a short and brave fight with cancer.
Loving wife, mother, grand-mother, mother-in-law, sister, sister-in-law and aunt. She was also a surrogate mother to many people who wandered into her life over the years.
While there is sadness, we must also rejoice in her great life and all the joy and selfless service Colette gave to others. She touched the hearts of many people and will leave a huge void.
After a successful and rewarding career in the fraud department of a major bank, Colette retired in 2000 and turned to volunteer work where she and Pops (Vern) did a variety of volunteer services. For the last 15 years they dedicated every 2nd Thursday to working with “Dans La Rue”, a service helping street kids in the heart of Montreal. Colette and Pops would load up the “Dans La Rue” RV and would serve hotdogs to street kids, and anyone else in need, until 2:00am, but mostly Colette talked to many street kids and made a connection and a difference in their lives. In 2014 both Colette and Pops were honoured with a Community Service award for their work with “Dans La Rue“.
Visitation will take place at l’Auberge Universelle (5000, Sherbrooke St. E, Montreal H1V 1A1) on Monday, January 9, 2017 from 1:00 p.m. to 5 p.m. and the celebration of her life will follow at 5:00 p.m. The family invites you to stay after for a reception.
For those not able to attend the visitation, feel free to honour Colette’s memory by performing a random act of kindness wherever you may be.
We ask that everyone attending wear a splash of green to celebrate her birthday (March 17 – St. Patrick’s Day) as Colette would have wanted celebration and not sadness.
One of Colette’s final requests was “In lieu of flowers, please do a random kindness act for a homeless person or a stranger”.
