Deonarine, Bhan, 86 of Dartmouth passed away August 23, 2016 at the Halifax Infirmary QEII. Born in south Trinidad he was the oldest sibling a son of Deonarine and Soogwantee Deonarine. From his early days, Bhan took an active leadership role both in his home and community. He attended Naparima College in San Fernando before going to work for Texaco. He immigrated to Nova Scotia in 1969 to pursue studies and work at Dalhousie University. Bhan continued his research at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography where he became an expert in micropaleontology, publishing several papers and books. Bhan was dedicated to his community serving as a member of the Municipalities Advisory Committee on Multicultural Affairs and Human Rights and was a founding member of the Carindo Cultural Association. He was also a member of the Federal Business Development Bank’s Multicultural Business Advisory Committee. Bhan was a life member, honourary board member and statesman of the Nova Scotia Cricket Association for well over 40 years. He was also a long-time servant of Cricket Canada, best known for his role as National Selector and Chairman of Selectors. Warmly considered the grandfather of cricket in Nova Scotia and to honour his contribution, the “Deonarine Cup” T-20 annual tournament is named in his honour. Some would say cricket was Bhan’s life. But he was equally dedicated to his community and temple both in Nova Scotia and Trinidad. The most important priority was his family – not only those close to him, but his large extended family around the world, who considered him their leader and patriarch. He was incredibly dedicated to his loving wife of 56 years who will miss him dearly. His absence creates a significant void for all who knew him. Bhan is survived by his wife Prem, daughter Shobha(Mike), sons Kash (Cindy), Dave (Cindy), sister Mona (James), brothers Chan, Krish (Beryl), granchdilren Nyssa, Sonja, Mikal and Max. A visitation will be held on Thursday from 7:00pm – 8:30 pm in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St, Dartmouth. A funeral service will be held Friday August 26, 2016 at 11 am in Atlantic Funeral Home Chapel.
