Betty MacKenzie
September 21, 1925 – June 3, 2017
Peacefully at home in Cobourg on June 3, 2017. Survived by her husband William (Bill) MacKenzie, her sister Shirley Cooke, her children Dr. Kathryn Douglas (Barry Hodgson), Sheila Boyd, Steven Douglas and Diane Babyn and her grandchildren Matthew Hodgson, Ben Hodgson, Dr. Allison Boyd, Jason Douglas, Ryan Douglas, Emily Kinnear (Mike), Kimberley Babyn, and Andrew Babyn.
Predeceased by her parents Ralph Smith and Hazel McKay (nee Wagar), her brother Jack Smith and her first husband Harold Douglas.
Betty was born in Kingston, Ontario. She obtained her teaching certification from McGill University (McDonald College campus) and very much enjoyed teaching at Edgewater School in Pincourt, Quebec for a number years. After a move to Ontario in the early 70s, she attended the University of Toronto (Mississauga campus) where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. Subsequently, she worked at U of T in research, testing infant hearing.
Throughout her life, Betty demonstrated an amazing ability to overcome life challenges and she was an inspiration to many.
A Funeral Service will be held at St. Peter’s Church (corner of King St. E and College St. in Cobourg) on Saturday, June 24th at 2pm. Interment to follow at the Heritage Cemetery of St. Peter.
The family would like to express their appreciation for the many years of compassionate support and assistance provided to both Betty and Bill by Jean Lambert, Nancy MacDonald and Heather Allison as well as the staff from St. Elizabeth Health Care.
