Bernice 'Bunny' Ferguson

Bernice 'Bunny' Ferguson

Obituary It is with deep sadness, we inform the community that an inspirational role model has died after a courageous battle with cancer. Bunny Ferguson will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, friend and passionate volunteer to many. Her exceptional strengths included her energy and enthusiasm, her relentless giving and dedication to her community, her smile, and her passion for whatever she believed in. One of her great joys was to have successfully climbed the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa in support of the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation. Bunny was married to her loving husband, John, for 50 years. They planned to celebrate their anniversary on the beautiful island of Kaua’i along with their three sons, Brent (Culia), Brad (Kathy) and Gordon (Carrie) and with their eight grandchildren, Evan, Angelique, Michael, Charlotte, Tucker, Charlie, Evelyn and Mac. Bunny is also survived by her 101 year old mother, Lo McLean, her brother, Clarence McLean (Vivian), her sister Shirley Cromie, and was pre-deceased by her father, Ernest Frances McLean. Bunny’s contributions to her community, province and country have been exemplary. Within her volunteer career, she was President of the St. Albert Welcome Wagon Newcomer’s Club; President of the Canadian Cancer Society – Edmonton; President of the Northern Alberta Ladies Curling Association; Director of Ronald McDonald House; Founding Director of Alberta Performing Arts Stabilization Fund; first Public Council Member of the Alberta Pharmaceutical Association (now Alberta College of Pharmacists); Founding Director of World Track & Field Championships 2001; Chair of Winspear Centre for the Music Hard Hat Opening; Founding Director of the Canadian Centre for Social Entrepreneurship; Founding Chair of the Alberta Business Family Institute at the University of Alberta; Council Member of the Alberta Order of Excellence; Director of the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation; Vice-Chair of the Lois Hole Hospital for Women Campaign; Director for the Norlien Foundation; Committee Member of the Royal Mayfair Golf Club Legacy Fund; Member of the Premier’s Council for Alberta’s Promise; and the Director of the Rideau Hall Foundation, Ottawa. As a Founding Director of the Advisory Board of the Peter Lougheed Leadership Initiative (collaboration between the University of Alberta and The Banff Centre), Bunny touched the lives of many students by helping to develop their confidence, communication skills and leadership abilities. She took great pride in the construction of the Peter Lougheed Leadership College Hall on the University of Alberta campus. Bunny received many honours and awards including becoming Honorary Member of the Alberta College of Pharmacists; receiving the Alberta Centennial Medal and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal; an inductee in the City of Edmonton Community Service Hall of Fame; a Member of the Order of Canada; an Honorary Doctorate of Laws Degree from the University of Alberta; and the recipient together with her husband of the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce Northern Lights Award of Distinction. The family wish to express their sincere gratitude to Dr. Karen King and Dr. Tony Fields and their team at the Cross Cancer Institute for helping Bunny through her stages of wellness. A Memorial Service in Bunny’s honor will be held at the Timms Centre for the Arts at the University of Alberta, room 3-146 Fine Arts Building, corner of 112 Street & 87 Avenue, Edmonton on Thursday, July 14, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. Parking will be provided underground.
