Obituary of Arthur Choate
CHOATE, Arthur « Garth » Selkirk – July 28, 1925 – Passed away on December 25, 2017 at age 92, at the home of his daughter, Louise Parkinson (nee Choate). Garth and his brothers James, Harold and Kenyon were born in Warsaw to Beatrice and Harold « Hal » Choate. The family moved to Peterborough about 1929 and Garth became an « East City Boy » soon after.
As a boy in his father’s hardware store on Hunter Street, Garth learned the difference between an axe and an adze and many other items.
In 1941, General Electric was seeking anyone who could spell lathe, so Garth was hired and apprenticed as a machinist. He worked for GE until 1986 with a couple of lapses.
Garth was attracted to fellow worker Mildred MacDonald in 1963 and they married a year later, combining Garth’s children Andrew and Louise with Mildred’s son Kim. There are grandchildren Kate, Brian and Ryan, one great granddaughter, Hannah, and many nieces and nephews. Brothers James, Harold and Kenyon have predeceased Garth.
Garth survived lymphoma but Mildred died of cancer, December 1, 2009, a great loss to our family. A Celebration of life will be held at Louise’s home, 2158 Davis Road, Cavan-Monaghan, on Saturday, March 3, 2018 between 1-4 pm. Interment will be with Mildred in Warsaw in the Spring.
