Armand Greenwood 1948 – 2017

In Loving Memory of Armand Charles Greenwood
February 25, 1948 – December 19, 2017
It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Armand Charles Greenwood, due to a heart attack, on December 19, 2017 in Barriere, BC. Armand was 69 years old.
Armand was born in Trail, BC on February 25, 1948, the third of three children. He grew up in the Trail/Castlegar area where he attended school. Right from the start, Armand was very athletic and into sports where he had set several BC high school track and field records and was an avid baseball pitcher. In March of 1966 Armand joined the Royal Canadian Navy where he served for 14 years. He started as a Ship’s Weapon Service Technician and quickly made his way to a Ship’s Diver. While being stationed at the Navy Diving Unit in Esquimalt BC, he moved on to become a Deep-Sea Diver and Explosives Demolition Technician. The Navy took Armand all over the Pacific to places like Japan, Australia, Hawaii, Vietnam, North America’s West Coast and the East Coast of Canada. In 1967 Armand traveled across Canada with the Canadian Armed Forces Tattoo where displays of Military history were performed. He was a member of the Canon Brigade in the Navy Tattoo. While Armand was in the Navy he was also an accomplished Golden Gloves Boxer.
Armand met Judy in 1970 in Victoria, BC. The two were later wed on August 28th, 1971. The newlyweds resided at the Navel housing at Rocky Point just outside of Victoria, BC where they had two daughters. Armand continued in the Navy until he requested release in 1980. The family moved to Barriere, BC later that year where they purchased 60 acres and built their dream log home. Armand started a new career path of truck driving. He started working for Gilbert Smith Forest Products as a logging truck driver where he was very proud of his old Hayes truck. He was also a highway driver for KenWes Trucking around that time. Dad graduated up to a new Peterbilt when he started driving logging truck for Keith Russell. We don’t think there was ever a truck that was polished so much. Armand continued his love of baseball where he volunteered as coach in Barriere. During the spring break of April 1989, Armand had another career change. He got the opportunity to apply for a job at Ledcor at the Samatosum mine just outside of Barriere. He started with Ledcor as a heavy-duty mechanic and welder in the mining sector. With Armand’s strong work ethic and his quiet assertive character, he quickly advanced to Master Mechanic and on to be a Mechanical and Equipment Supervisor. With this position Armand did a lot of travelling, working in Northern BC and Alberta, Yellow Knife and 7 years in various mines in Nevada, Idaho, California and Arizona. Armand thoroughly enjoyed his job with the Ledcor company where he initially retired in 2011. He then went to work part time for Gram in Barriere, to keep busy as he wasn’t good at sitting idle. Ledcor contacted him in 2012 to pull him out of retirement where he worked for an additional two years. In 2014, Armand retired to the acreage in Barriere with Judy where he worked part-time as a mechanic and snow plow driver for Murray Purcha & Sons. Armand loved to work and keep busy and was very grateful for this part-time job. Alongside Judy, they ran Sienna Stables at their acreage keeping busy boarding horses, building the barn, shelters and general upkeep. Armand also loved to help out around his daughter and son-in-law’s farm in Alberta driving combine, baling hay, fixing equipment and helping with the cattle. Armand’s favorite past times were being at the lake with his family boating and water skiing, playing with his dogs, golfing, fishing, spending time with his grandchildren and watching NASCAR racing. He will be greatly missed by his wife, family and all who knew him.
Armand leaves behind his loving wife of 46 years Judy (nee Murray), daughters; Kathlyn (David) Peltzer, Daphne Sheehan, grandchildren; Bryanne and Lyndsey Peltzer, Reyse Hudson, Lacey and Tripper Sheehan, mother Eva Long, sister Jackie (Jim) Whaley, brother Alfred (Roberta) Greenwood and numerous nieces and nephews. Armand was predeceased by his father Leonard.
In memory of Armand, if friends desire memorial tributes can be made to the Yellowhead Pioneer Residence, Box 212 Barriere BC, V0E-1E0, or the BC SPCA (Kamloops), 1211 8th St, Kamloops BC, V2B 2Y3
A celebration of life will be held in the Spring of 2018.
