Archibald (Archie) MacKinnon
Sydney Mines
We, the family of the late Archibald MacKinnon, 79, regret to announce that he has lost his courageous battle with cancer and passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, August 10th, 2016.
Born in Sydney Mines on March 19th, 1937, Archie was the son of the late Archie and Maggie (Gibbons) MacKinnon.
Archie was a loving partner, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend. You could always count on Poppy to have a big smile and lots of hugs and kisses, and of course a story or two. He was a member of the North Sydney Seniors Club where he enjoyed attending the dances and spending time with his friends. He enjoyed playing darts at the Sydney Mines Fireman’s Club, and in his younger years was an avid horseshoe player, where, partnered with his oldest son Archie Jr., they became Maritime Champions in 1982. Prior to his illness, he could be found on almost any afternoon at Tim Hortons, chatting up a storm as he so loved to do.
Archie is survived by his loving companion Patsy MacAulay; his children Archie Jr. (Stella), Gale (Tom) Higham, and Ernie (Kim); his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Margaret (Sis) Bailey; sisters Isabel Hollingsworth and Iris Webster; brothers Robert, John and Ernie.
Special thanks to Dr. Allison Archibald, Dr. John Ritter, Palliative Care and the VON nurses for their care and compassion during his illness.
A celebration of Archie’s life will be held on Thursday, August 25th, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in Trinity Anglican Church, Queen St., Sydney Mines, with Rev. Stacey LeMoine officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Trinity Anglican Roof and Building Fund. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com
