It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Annyta Stevens on June 30, 2016. Annyta was born on December 15, 1922 in Edwand, Alberta. She was the eldest of six siblings and grew up in Rosedale and Smoky Lake. In school, Annyta excelled in music and the arts and her interest in these areas continued throughout her life. As a young girl she was a figure skater and enjoyed playing the guitar. After graduation, Annyta went into nursing and later became interested in police work. In 1956, she was hired as one of Edmonton’s first policewomen which led to a long and successful 26 year career with the force. Later in her career, Annyta focused her experience and skills in the area of child abuse investigations and this proved to be her niche. Annyta was asked by many police departments across Canada, and the Canadian Police College, to lecture on the subject and was also instrumental in creating the Edmonton Police Child Abuse Unit. In 1982, Annyta was the recipient of the YWCA Tribute to Women Award, as well as an Edmonton Police Department commendation, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to police work. In her retirement, she assisted in creating the Retired Member’s Guild for retired police officers. Annyta’s kind, loving, and compassionate nature was evident in all areas of her life, including her close relationships with her family and with her dear friends. Many layettes and hopechests have been filled with Annyta’s handicraft work. Annyta is survived by her sister, Irene Sacker; sister- in-law, Ethel Twerdochlib; and many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents, Elizabeth and John Twerdochlib; siblings, Fern, Mike, Alexandra, and Freddie; brothers-in-law, Fred and Cliff; and her beloved Chihuahua, Jose. A special thank you to the staff of Unit 54 at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for all of their care. Prayer Service Friday, July 8 at 7:00 p.m. at Park Memorial Chapel, 9709 -111 Avenue, Edmonton. Funeral Service Saturday, July 9 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church, Smoky Lake (one block N.W. of the junction of Highway 855 and Highway 28). In lieu of flowers, donations to the Salvation Army or the Royal Canadian Legion would be appreciated.
