Angus Joseph MacDonell
Peacefully and with family by his side, Angus Joseph MacDonell passed away early Monday morning, January 31, 2017 at Gimli Community Health Centre at the age of 85 years.
Loved and cared for until the end by his wife Leona MacDonell (nee Lupyrypa) of Gimli/Aspen Park, he is survived by his five children, Leonard (Trish), David, Brian (Tania), Sandra (Paul), and Robert (Cathy). Survived, as well, by siblings Charlie (Marilyn) and Jerome (Ruth) and by his grandchildren, Derek, Scott, Ross, Hudson, Rebecca, Nicole, Stephen, Ryan and Melissa.
Joe is predeceased by his parents John and Mary Catherine and siblings John F. (Phyllis) and Donald (Erika), Dorothy, Evelyn (Bill), Eileen (Bill), Doreen and Inez (Kenny).
Born in Greenfield, Ontario, Joe or “Mac” to many, served in the Canadian Armed Forces for 35 years before retiring in 1987. During his early years in the service he met his blonde beauty, soon to be bride, Leona, while stationed in Gimli and they picked up and moved many times over the years with their growing family. His work inevitably led to a several year tour of duty with NATO in Heidelberg, Germany from there they travelled extensively which was a passion of his. To Joe, there was no better view than out of the cockpit window of his RV and he loved the open road and meeting up with friends and fellow travelers in campsites all over the map. While Joe was a pretty good sportsman he shone as the hockey coach for many of his four son’s teams. But it was golf that got his heart pumping and boy he loved to show off his lowest score cards, even if there was a foot wedge or two involved in acquiring that score.
Joe’s smiling eyes, slap-happy nature and his tickling and teasing will be fondly remembered by his nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. First to put his hand out to meet a stranger, those that knew him best knew him to be a man who believed deeply in god and he and his “Lee” rarely missed Sunday mass at the local Catholic church where they would be seen standing side by side holding hands.
Funeral Mass to celebrate his memory, officiated by Father Art Seaman, Thursday, February 2, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, Gimli MB. Interment at a later date in the Gimli Community Cemetery.
