Alice Doreen Doreen Duncan – 2016

Alice Doreen Duncan passed away on September 10, 2016 at the Red Deer Hospice. She was 79 years of age. Doreen was born in Trochu, Alberta on August 14, 1937 to Mae and Harry Aitken. When she was two years old, they moved to Red Deer and lived on 45 St. near the South School where she received her elementary education. She graduated from the Lindsay Thurber Composite High School in 1955.
She married Jim Duncan on January 5, 1957. After living in Rocky Mountain House for a short period of time, they moved to the farm at Withrow. Since Doreen grew up in the city, she found farm life very different. Splitting wood to make kindling to start the fire, milking cows, and cranking the cream separator, were all things she had to learn, but which soon became routine. Along with farm chores and raising a family, Doreen found time to read and to enjoy the creation that she came to love and felt that she was a part of. She particularly enjoyed the hummingbirds in the summer and the mule deer in the winter.
Often it was the ordinary things that filled Doreen with intrigue. For example, travelling to Dawson City to observe first hand 24 hour sunshine, a ride on an airboat through the Florida Everglades observing the alligators, or having her interest aroused by the 14th century castles as she traveled through the British Isles. The climax of her travels was a boat ride across the Sea of Galilee from Capernaum to Tiberius, as she toured the bible land.
In 1976, Doreen was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. As a result of what she had learned from the scriptures, she was moved to share the knowledge that she had gained with her family and neighbours. She looked forward to the time when God’s Kingdom would remove wickedness from the Earth and bring about a return of the paradise conditions that existed in the garden of Eden. (Psalms 37:10, 11; Luke 23:43)
Doreen is survived by her husband Jim, sons John (Karen) and Dale (Brenda), daughter Kathy, five grandchildren and one great grandchild. Also, two brothers-in-law George (Ann), and Peter; and one sister-in-law Hazel. She was predeceased by her parents, one son, five brothers-in-law, and three sisters-in-law.
A memorial service will be held at the Eckville Community Hall, 2:00pm on Friday, September 16, 2016.
