Smith, Alfred J. (LT) O.N.- It is with great sadness that his family announces the death of Alfred Smith on Tuesday, August 2, 2016. Beloved husband of Betty (nee Lemon) for over 70 years. Honoured and respected father of Alf, Malcolm, Randy, Cameron and Ian. Grandfather of Adam, Eric and Braydon Smith and Justin Cloet; great-grandfather of Austin and Jackson Smith. Welcomed into our family with much love – Carol, Karen, Robin, Roxanne, Alanna and Shannon. Brother of the late Louisa Bennett Hummel, uncle of Marjorie, Tim and the late Bill Bennett. During WWII, Alf served with the Canadian Armoured Corp. (R.E.C.C.E.) and post-war with the Hamilton Service Batallion, retiring in 1968. Alf’s working career began in 1941, an apprentice at 16, with Macklin & Macklin, continuing as Service Manager with McAlister Motors, Snowdon Ford, and briefly Discovery Ford – retiring in 1992, marking 51 years of service to Ford customers. Past member of Burlington Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, Lakeshore Probus Club, and member of Legion Branch #60 for over 40 years. A faithful Anglican, Alf attended St. Matthew’s, St. Christopher’s and for the past 48 years, St. Luke’s Anglican Church, where he served as Warden, Parish Council Chairman, Verger, President of former B.A.C., Sunday greeter and weekly minder – honoured recipient of the Order of Niagara (2004). Visitation at SMITH’S FUNERAL HOME, 1167 Guelph Line (one stop light north of QEW), BURLINGTON (905-632-3333), on Friday, August 5, 2016 from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m.. A Service of Remembrance will be held at St. Luke’s Anglican Church, 1421 Elgin Street, Burlington on Saturday, August 6, 2016 at 11 a.m. followed by a reception in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Alf to St. Luke’s Memorial Fund or charity of your choice would be sincerely appreciated by the family.
