Alex Forsyth
Alex Lannie Forsyth ~ Jan 4, 1954-Dec 15, 2017
It is will great sadness that we announce that Alex Forsyth has passed away at the young age of 63. Alex kept his humor right up until the end of his life and his loved ones were honored to be at his side.
Alex Lannie Forsyth is the 3rd child born to Hugh and Esther Forsyth. He was born January 4th, 1954 in Gull Lake Sask. Alex attended school in Tompkins and Gull Lake. He left school after grade 11 and joined the Army at the young age of 17.
On July 21st, 1973, Alex married the girl who grew up just down the street in Tompkins, Laura Mae Phillips. At the time of their marriage Alex adopted Laura’s two young children: William and Tracy. After they were wed, the young family resided in Calgary, Alberta, where Alex was a Corporal for the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry. Soon after, a daughter, Angela was born.
The family moved back to Tompkins after Alex’s dad, Hugh, passed away in 1975. Alex worked as the town Administrator an SGI Insurance agent, and was a volunteer firefighter. The family was complete with the arrival of another daughter, Darla, in 1982.
Alex and his family moved several times over the next few years. They moved to Swift Current in 1987, where he managed a truck stop. Alex, Laura and Darla moved to Manitou, Manitoba where he worked for a poultry farm for 15 months. Laura was very homesick for her grandchildren so they decided to move back to Herbert in 1997. At this time Alex became employed with Robertson Implements where he remained a dedicated, hard working employee for the next 20 years. Alex was devastated when his wife, Laura, was diagnosed with cancer in 2002. Shortly after she lost her battle in 2007, Alex moved back to Swift Current. At this time he was transferred from the Implement department to the new Robertson Rental Store where he worked until his illness no longer allowed him to be there.
Leaving the Army before he wanted left a void in his life. Alex became an active member of CASARA Search and Rescue and it filled some of that void. His passion and commitment to this cause was infectious. His daughter Darla joined him for a short while and his son William and granddaughter Megan are both very active in the Lethbridge Search and Rescue Unit.
Anyone who knows Alex will know how much the Royal Canadian Legion meant to him. He wore his uniform with great pride at every event and parade he could be part of. He was involved in everything from being a flag bearer at the Ford Women’s World Curling to participating in Legion Cribbage tournaments. He wore his Deputy Zone Commander Medal with great honor. Alex was always a very quiet reserved man, but when he put that uniform on he was in his comfort zone.
Alex rekindled a friendship with a high school friend, Rosemary Sorenson. They became companions the past few years and were able to create some great memories in the short time they were together.
Alex is survived by William John Forsyth and his children, Megan, Mindi and Cole; Tracy Lynn (Grant) Miller, along with their children Jordan, Jonathan and Joshua; Angela Louise Forsyth; and Darla Daylene Longtin and children Summer, Danika and Ashtyn; partner, Rosemary Sorenson, and her family; brother, Harvey (Marg) Forsyth; nephew, Brad (Melissa) Forsyth; great nieces, Mikaela and Camryn Forsyth; mother-in-law, Dorothy Phillips; and many cousins, friends and fellow Legion Members that held very close to his heart.
Alex is predeceased by his wife, Laura Mae Phillips, his parents Hugh Forsyth and Esther (Olson) Forsyth, an infant brother and his father-in–aw Albert Phillips.
A private family internment preceded the memorial service and Alex was laid to rest beside his wife Laura in the Herbert Cemetery.
At Alex’s request, donations can be made to any Legion Club of your choice or to the Canadian Cancer Society, as you see fit. Warren’s Funeral Home were entrusted with the arrangements.
