Albert Fenske
Albert Fenske, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away at his residence in Selkirk, MB on Wednesday, September 14,2016.
He is survived by his wife Patricia, daughter Kate (Liam Martin), son Andrew (Rachelle Northwood), granddaughter Milla, sisters Marie (John Wiens), and Erika Fenske as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by parents, Albert and Gertrude Fenske, and twin daughters Claire and Andrea.
Al was born September 26, 1947 in Lunenburg, Germany. At the age of 3, he, with his parents and sister Marie, emigrated to Canada. He grew up in Winnipeg MB, developing a life filled with varying interests from tennis and basketball, to aquarium fish to collecting everything from comics and pennies to model trains and James Bond movies.
He had an entrepreneurial spirit honed early on with studies in Economics and Geography at University of Winnipeg. A decision to relieve some schooling debt led him to what he believed was going to be an interim teaching job at Selkirk Junior High, Selkirk MB, in 1970 only to find his love of teaching and coaching became his lifelong career, from which he finally retired in 2002. Highlights for him were coaching high school teams, from basketball to stock market competitions, achieving provincial success in both. Coach Fen and his Royals teams of 1975, 1976 and 1978 were inducted into the Manitoba Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015. He competed himself in Manitoba Summer Games in tennis, winning men’s tennis doubles in the late 1980’s.
In 1974 he met his future wife, Pat (nee Friesen) at a basketball tournament. They were married in 1975.
In the early 1990’s he began a side career in order to pursue his lifelong passion for movies, and he opened a video store, Lastertek, where he gave numerous students their first jobs.
In his university days he had learned to play bridge, paying for coffees and lunches with his winnings. This in turn became another passion in retirement when he joined the Selkirk Duplicate Bridge Club where he made many new friends.
His last years were quieter, as a result of health difficulties, but many a night were filled with watching old movies, especially his collection of sci-fi and James Bond. May our loving memories of him continue to be “stirred and not shaken.”
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, September 22, at 11:00 a.m. in the Gilbart Funeral Chapel, Selkirk, with Rev. Deborah Vitt officiating.
